In\u00a0recent years he has\u00a0also\u00a0become one of the\u00a0most vocal\u00a0leaders within the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Church hierarchy calling for\u00a0comprehensive immigration reform.<\/p>\n<p>The gathering will focus not on internal Church issues, but on \u201cthe neglected challenge of bringing Catholic principles to public life so as to truly be \u2018salt, light and leaven\u2019 in a divided society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John Carr, the Initiative\u2019s director, and Kim Daniels, a member of the Vatican\u2019s Secretariat for Communications and a consultor to the USCCB\u2019s Committee for Religious Liberty, are leading the conference, which will bring together 60 select attendees from across the ideological spectrum with the stated goal of exploring ways to help overcome division and to help forge a more unified witness.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with\u00a0<em>Crux<\/em>, Carr said Catholics have an unprecedented opportunity with Francis\u2019s leadership to bring Catholic teaching into the public square, but he believes internal divisions among some are squandering that prospect.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><a
