Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago and Archbishop Jos\u00e9 G\u00f3mez of Los Angeles, who at least on some matters, would be regarded stereotypically as representing \u201cliberal\u201d and \u201cconservative\u201d views, will headline together a major convening of Catholic leaders this June aimed at overcoming division, building relationships, and strengthening the Catholic community\u2019s contribution to the common good.<\/p>\n
\u201cThrough Many, One: Overcoming Polarization Through Catholic Social Thought,\u201d will take place June 4-6 at Georgetown University and is a project of the university\u2019s Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life in response to what its organizers have described as \u201cthe harmful divisions within our Church.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cupich \u2013 who was appointed to Chicago in 2014 \u2013 is widely perceived\u00a0as one of Francis\u2019s closest allies in the U.S. Church and has\u00a0been a\u00a0strong\u00a0champion for worker\u2019s rights, immigration, and the consistent ethic of life.\u00a0Gomez\u00a0has led the nation\u2019s largest and most diverse diocese since 2011 and is currently the vice-president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).\u00a0He was ordained a priest through Opus Dei, a movement that is widely\u00a0viewed as having conservative leanings,\u00a0and has been a vocal advocate for pro-life and religious liberty causes. In\u00a0recent years he has\u00a0also\u00a0become one of the\u00a0most vocal\u00a0leaders within the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Church hierarchy calling for\u00a0comprehensive immigration reform.<\/p>\n
The gathering will focus not on internal Church issues, but on \u201cthe neglected challenge of bringing Catholic principles to public life so as to truly be \u2018salt, light and leaven\u2019 in a divided society.\u201d<\/p>\n
John Carr, the Initiative\u2019s director, and Kim Daniels, a member of the Vatican\u2019s Secretariat for Communications and a consultor to the USCCB\u2019s Committee for Religious Liberty, are leading the conference, which will bring together 60 select attendees from across the ideological spectrum with the stated goal of exploring ways to help overcome division and to help forge a more unified witness.<\/p>\n
