The popular Catholic\u00a0radio host<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 I\u2019ve been on his show a couple times \u2014 spent part of last Thursday\u2019s show chatting with a deacon candidate, Phil McCarty (from the Diocese of San Jose), two days before his ordination.<\/p>\n

Some highlights:<\/p>\n

\u201cFather Jim, does it annoy you that a man like this gets to say he\u2019s ordained when really he\u2019s just becoming a deacon?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you get \u2018fake ordained,\u2019 like the diaconate, do you have a party?\u00a0 Is it really ordination?\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s some interesting dialogue around the 13:00 mark on the subject of making a promise of obedience to a bishop and his successors.<\/p>\n

And around the 18:00 mark, they discuss the difference between \u201cdeacon\u2019s wives\u201d and \u201cwives of deacons.\u201d<\/p>\n

They were clearly ribbing the deacon candidate and trying to get a rise out of him. Meh. I was whelmed. It wasn\u2019t nearly as funny as Lino & Co. thought. An opportunity to inform and catechize was, instead, a moment to mock. But maybe it\u2019s a matter of taste.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure some probably thought it was a scream.<\/p>\n

My main takeaway: Father Jim sure laughs a lot.<\/p>\n
