{"id":289800,"date":"2018-08-21T08:40:12","date_gmt":"2018-08-21T12:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/deaconsbench\/?p=289800"},"modified":"2018-08-21T08:40:12","modified_gmt":"2018-08-21T12:40:12","slug":"some-good-news-at-last-a-beautiful-new-church-rises-in-georgia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/deaconsbench\/2018\/08\/some-good-news-at-last-a-beautiful-new-church-rises-in-georgia\/","title":{"rendered":"Some good news, at last: a beautiful new church rises in Georgia"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><figure id=\"attachment_289803\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-289803\" style=\"width: 575px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2018\/08\/28783148_2114603981899338_7254278382320353280_n.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-289803\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2018\/08\/28783148_2114603981899338_7254278382320353280_n-575x367.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"367\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-289803\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From Mary Our Queen Facebook page<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>This has been a long time coming.<\/p>\n<p>Some readers may remember I first reported on<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/deaconsbench\/2015\/07\/what-ever-happened-to-that-buffalo-church-being-moved-to-georgia\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">this remarkable undertaking<\/a><\/strong> a decade ago.\u00a0 The idea: to dismantle a shuttered Catholic church in Buffalo and move it, brick by brick, to a lot in Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>The plan hit a few roadblocks along the way, but something close to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwinnettdailypost.com\/local\/mary-our-queen-catholic-church-building-basilica-style-sanctuary-in\/article_ec2b1b69-089d-5693-bd76-1cc82747daad.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">that original vision is about to be realized:\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI would like to think the people (in the parish) will be happy because they\u2019ve been planning this church for many years,\u201d said Mary Our Queen pastor, Father Darragh Griffith. \u201cThe people have been waiting and putting a lot of effort into it, so hopefully they\u2019ll see it as a beautiful church and we\u2019ll grow and build after it\u2019s dedicated.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<blockquote><p>After years of planning, Mary Our Queen Catholic Church is in the process of building its new sanctuary, which is a replica of the Roman Basilica-style St. Gerard\u2019s Catholic Church in Buffalo, N.Y.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<blockquote><p>Mary Our Queen officials broke ground on their new home last fall, with the Archdiocese of Atlanta\u2019s official newspaper, The Georgia Bulletin, reporting at the time that it was estimated to be a $6.8 million construction project.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<blockquote><p>\u2026At one time, the plan had been to dismantle St. Gerard\u2019s brick by brick and move it down to Peachtree Corners where it would be rebuilt on the church\u2019s property. The Buffalo-based parish celebrated its last mass Jan. 1, 2008, and it was not long after that when Mary Our Queen, then led by Father David Dye, came up with the idea of raising money to move the church to Peachtree Corners.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<blockquote><p>In the end, however, the church opted to buy St. Gerard\u2019s stained-glass windows, pews and altar and move those pieces to Georgia for use in the new church building.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s like taking old wine and putting it into new wineskins if you like,\u201d Griffith said. \u201cIt\u2019s something different. It\u2019s something new. I haven\u2019t heard of it before, to do this, so it\u2019s going to be interesting and challenging \u2014 and hopefully beautiful because they had beautiful stained-glass windows, pews and altars and other artifacts (at St. Gerard\u2019s).\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwinnettdailypost.com\/local\/mary-our-queen-catholic-church-building-basilica-style-sanctuary-in\/article_ec2b1b69-089d-5693-bd76-1cc82747daad.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Read it all.\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This has been a long time coming.
