Women should play a greater role in the training of priests to fight the child abuse \u201ccrisis\u201d that has engulfed the Catholic Church, Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet has said.<\/p>\n

More must be done within the church to tackle the root causes of the latest wave of global abuse scandals to rock the institution, said Ouellet, the prefect of the Congregation for Bishops.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would need participation of more women in (training) of priests,\u201d he told reporters on Saturday on the sidelines of a meeting in the Polish city of Poznan.<\/p>\n

Better care must be taken when choosing bishops, he said, adding that more women should select candidates for priesthood and assess their suitability for the job.<\/p>\n

His comments at the four-day assembly of the Presidents of the Bishops\u2019 Conferences of Europe come amid a slew of devastating assault allegations spanning several continents.<\/p>\n

People in Australia, Europe, and North and South America have charged they were sexually abused by clergymen and lay people, in what German Archbishop Georg Gaenswein has called the church\u2019s \u201cown 9\/11\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are facing a crisis in the life of the church\u2026 And also to certain extent a rebellion,\u201d Ouellet said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a very serious matter that has to be dealt with in a spiritual way, not only in a political way,\u201d he said, but added that direct attacks against the pope over the scandals were \u201cunjust\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
