<\/iframe><\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/communities\/south-county\/sd-se-statue-fundraising-20181005-story.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Details:\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>She will stand tall, with a torch held high, on a hilltop in\u00a0<a id=\"SDCT0056\" title=\"San Ysidro\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/topic\/san-diego-county\/san-ysidro-SDCT0056-topic.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">San Ysidro<\/a>, overlooking the\u00a0<a id=\"PLTRA00170\" title=\"U.S.-Mexico Border\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/topic\/politics-government\/domestic-policy\/immigration\/u.s.-mexico-border-PLTRA00170-topic.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">U.S.-Mexico border<\/a>\u00a0region.<\/p>\nInspired by the Statue of Liberty, the 40-foot-tall monument of Mary, mother of Jesus, will stand as a symbol intended to welcome immigrants and refugees headed to the U.S.<\/p>\nThe statue will go up on the hilltop parking lot of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, where community members convened Friday to kick off a<a href=\"https:\/\/gogetfunding.com\/welcomethestranger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">\u00a0crowdfunding campaign\u00a0<\/a>to raise $1 million to build the monument.<\/p>\n\u201cIt will stand as a beacon of hope and encouragement for people engaged in the struggle of the migrant,\u201d said artist Jim Bliesner, who drew inspiration from immigrants across San Diego for the statue\u2019s design.<\/p>\nThe $2 million project, spearheaded by nonprofit San Diego Organizing Project, already has received $1 million from the California Endowment, a private health foundation. The hope is to raise the next $1 million and build the statue by early 2019.<\/p>\nIt will be named \u201cWelcome the Stranger.\u201d<\/p>\nBishop Robert McElroy, of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego, said the monument and its location will send a strong message about the border.<\/p>\n\u201cIt is a symbol and powerful reminder that for us, for us as people of faith, for us as America, the border represents not a line of separation,\u201d he said, \u201cbut a line that unites us to Latin America.\u201d<\/p>\nHe said the statue will commemorate the past, the present and the future of the U.S.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/communities\/south-county\/sd-se-statue-fundraising-20181005-story.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Read more.\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\nCheck out the video report above.
