A Michigan woman is\u00a0demanding that Meijer\u00a0<\/a>discipline a pharmacist and implement a company-wide policy for how pharmacists should handle\u00a0religious and\u00a0moral objections to\u00a0dispensing medication after she was denied a prescription\u00a0to help complete a miscarriage.<\/p>\n

Rachel Peterson, 35, of Ionia alleges a pharmacist at a Meijer store in Petoskey refused to fill her prescription for a drug called misoprostol (brand name Cytotec) in July because of his personal religious views. She says he also refused to transfer the prescription to another pharmacy.<\/p>\n

Misoprostol\u00a0<\/a>can be used to prevent stomach ulcers and also can be used to induce labor during pregnancy, to aid in the completion of a miscarriage and in the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage. When combined with another drug, it can be used to induce an abortion.<\/p>\n

The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan<\/a>\u00a0sent a letter Tuesday on Peterson\u2019s behalf to Meijer,\u00a0saying what the pharmacist did was\u00a0discriminatory and violated\u00a0the state\u2019s public accommodation laws.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Some background: according to Peterson, she learned in June that she was nine-weeks pregnant with twins, but complications developed and one of the twins died. A few weeks later, a blood clot developed and the surviving fetus died. That was when she went to the pharmacy to seek to bring the pregnancy to a conclusion.<\/p>\n

\n

For women who\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0completely miscarry, there is a risk\u00a0of developing an infection called\u00a0sepsis<\/a>, which is dangerous and can be fatal.<\/p>\n

Peterson and her husband were in Petoskey when she tried to have the prescription filled.<\/p>\n

Just as they were about to go to the store to pick up the medicine, Peterson said she got a call from the Meijer pharmacist.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said that he was a good Catholic male and that he couldn\u2019t in good conscience give me this medication because it\u2019s used for abortions, and he could not prescribe that,\u201d Peterson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I divulged to him that the fetus was no longer viable, and that \u2026\u00a0I needed to progress the situation further, he said,\u00a0\u2018Well, that\u2019s your word and I don\u2019t believe you,\u2019 and he refused to fill it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Peterson said she asked him whether he could transfer it to another local pharmacy and he refused.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This is problematic on a lot of levels, but concerned Catholics should know: it\u2019s not an abortion if the fetus is already dead.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d be curious to hear the pharmacist\u2019s side of the story and hear him try to defend this decision. Because right now, on the face of it, he\u2019s not advancing the pro-life cause at all.
