A crowdfunding campaign formed by two Muslim groups has raised more than $60,000 for the victims of the\u00a0Pittsburgh synagogue shooting<\/a>, which killed 11, the Independent\u00a0reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Muslim-American non-profits Celebrate Mercy and MPower Change were behind the\u00a0campaign<\/a>, \u201cMuslims Unite For Pittsburgh Synagogue.\u201d It is also in partnership with the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n

The campaign reached its initial goal of $25,000 goal in six hours. As of press time, it raised $62,500 of its new $75,000 goal. The proceeds will help with funeral expenses and medical bills.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wish to respond to evil with good, as our faith instructs us, and send a powerful message of compassion through action,\u201d the campaign reads. \u201cOur Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said: \u2018Show mercy to those on earth, and the One in the Heavens will show mercy to you.\u2019 The Quran also teaches us to \u2018Repel evil by that which is better\u2019 (41:34).\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Two Muslim organizations have raised more than $130,000 to help victims and their families following the shooting massacre at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Tarek El-Messidi, a Chicago-based activist, said he learned of the synagogue shooting in a call Saturday morning from a friend who runs the Muslim fund-raising website LaunchGood. His friend asked Mr. El-Messidi if he could do something to help the victims, and he agreed.<\/p>\n

Within two hours, he had\u00a0created an online campaign<\/a>\u00a0with the backing of two Muslim groups,\u00a0CelebrateMercy<\/a>, where he is the founding director, and\u00a0MPower Change<\/a>. He set an initial goal of $25,000, which was promptly shattered as donations flooded in.<\/p>\n

Mr. El-Messidi said he was able to jump-start the campaign and bring in donations so quickly because he has unfortunately done this before. He created a\u00a0LaunchGood fund-raiser last year<\/a>\u00a0that collected $136,000 to repair hundreds of Jewish headstones vandalized in St. Louis and Philadelphia.<\/p>\n
