Episodes of\u00a0hate and intolerance<\/a><\/span>, whether crimes or simply bad behavior, are on the rise in American schools.<\/p>\n

Minors 18 years of age and younger were the offenders in 832 reported hate crimes in 2017, an increase of 27 percent from the year prior, according to FBI data released Tuesday. Minors accounted for 17 percent of all hate crimes in which the perpetrator was identifiable.<\/p>\n

Anti-Semitic acts, both crimes and non-criminal behavior, nearly doubled at U.S. elementary and secondary schools in 2017, according to the Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish advocacy group.<\/p>\n

Experts say the jump is more than just a case of \u201cboys will be boys,\u201d but a reflection of the community around them.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople view these as childish pranks, but they\u2019re more than that,\u201d said Jack McDevitt, the director of Northeastern\u2019s Institute on Race and Justice. \u201cThey send messages to communities that say, \u2018We don\u2019t want you.'\u201d<\/p>\n

Hate crimes are typically the stuff of men in their twenties and younger, saidMcDevitt, noting that younger people often mimic the attitudes of adults around them. In other words, when hate crimes rise nationally, offenses by minors rises even faster.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey react to what they see in their community,\u201d McDevitt said. \u201cWhen they see messages from society that says, \u2018It\u2019s okay,\u201d then it empowers young people who don\u2019t have a lot of perspective yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

McDevitt recalled an instance when a 14-year old boy threw a Molotov cocktail into the home of a black family that had recently moved into a historically white neighborhood. When police asked what prompted the behavior, the boy said he\u2019d overheard his parents say they\u2019d potentially leave the community if other black families moved in.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe parents were appalled by their son\u2019s interpretation, but it just shows that the language we use to portray other groups is important,\u201d McDevitt said.<\/p>\n

Hate crimes in the U.S. increased<\/a><\/span>\u00a017 percent in 2017, the third straight annual increase, according to the FBI. The ADL recorded 457 anti-Jewish incidents in elementary and secondary schools, a 94 percent increase from 235 in the year prior. Jonathan Greenblatt, the chief executive officer of the ADL, called the continued increases \u201cdeeply troubling.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
