Nazi props were temporarily declared verboten in LaGuardia High School\u2019s production of the Third Reich-set classic \u201cThe Sound of Music\u201d prior to the show\u2019s Thursday night opening.<\/p>\n

The principal at the elite \u201cFame\u201d school, Lisa Mars, ordered Nazi flags and symbols removed from the stage set of the beloved tale of the Von Trapp family, who fled the Nazis from their native Austria as Adolf Hitler took power, students told the Daily News.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThis is a very liberal school, we\u2019re all against Nazis,\u201d one sophomore performer told The News about the fuhrer furor. \u201cBut to take out the symbol is to try to erase history.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In the 1965 movie starring Julie Andrews, Von Trapp patriarch Georg \u2014 as played by Christopher Plummer \u2014 famously rips the Nazi flag in half. The story was based on a memoir by Von Trapp\u2019s daughter Maria.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Mars did not respond to requests for comment. After The News made inquiries, the city Department of Education said the Nazi flag would still appear in two specific scenes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cThe use of this historical symbol of hatred \u2026 serves both an artistic and pedagogical purpose, and the decision to include it was made in collaboration with school staff, students and families,\u201d said city education spokeswoman Miranda Barbot.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
