But Bishop Alexander Salazar\u2019s name was not on several lists released by the church, even though he\u2019d been investigated by the Pasadena Police Department in 2002. The inquiry involving Salazar only became public when Pope Francis\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world\/europe\/la-me-ln-bishop-salazar-resignation-20181219-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">accepted his resignation<\/a>\u00a0Wednesday as auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"card collection-item\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" card-content \">\n<blockquote><p>According to prosecutors and police, Salazar was accused of committing a lewd act with a child in the 1990s. The archdiocese said the allegations were made by a family who attended the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary church in Pasadena, where Salazar served as a pastor from 1988 to 1992. The family didn\u2019t go to police until 2002, during the height of the priest abuse scandal. Detectives investigated and submitted their findings to the Los Angeles County district attorney\u2019s office, which decided not to file charges.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"card collection-item\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" card-content \">\n<p>In 2004, Pope John Paul II elevated Salazar to the position of bishop. The archdiocese said its officials were not informed about the Pasadena investigation until 2005. But Pasadena police on Wednesday indicated at least some in the church might have known sooner. The department said the incident involving Salazar was said to have occurred at a private residence. But officials made \u201ccontact with the church and the school, in an abundance of caution, as they employed the individual against whom the complaint was made,\u201d the department said in a statement to The Times.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"card collection-item\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" card-content \">\n<blockquote><p>Once senior officials learned of the allegations, the archdiocese referred the matter to the Vatican\u2019s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which investigates clergy sexual misconduct, Archbishop Jose H. Gomez said in a letter to the parishioners Wednesday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"card collection-item\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" card-content \">\n<blockquote><p>The congregation \u201cimposed certain precautionary measures\u201d on Salazar, who remained a bishop.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"card collection-item\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" card-content \">\n<blockquote><p>Asked why the church did not name Salazar among the hundreds of clergy accused of misconduct, spokeswoman Adrian M. Alarcon said that the bishop was overseen by the pope and that it wasn\u2019t the archdiocese\u2019s place to make the disclosure.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My Patheos colleague <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/throughcatholiclenses\/2018\/12\/if-the-la-auxiliary-bishop-accused-of-abuse-was-a-priest\/?fbclid=IwAR2LtMdUUP18a77nID88f0CmYRqY5XVx9MvS1pC7CCqY9QRQDpuFOlr6nHQ\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Father Matthew Schneider<\/a><\/strong> has more insight and notes an important distinction: Salazar was a bishop, not a priest.<\/p>\n<p>That changes things:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Any priest who was being investigated would be placed on administrative leave. A \u201ccredible accusation\u201d is a relatively low bar to dismiss frivolous cases like if the priest wasn\u2019t at the parish when the allegation says the abuse took place. Instead of administrative leave, Bishop Salazar was kept on as the auxiliary bishop with minor restrictions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, it\u2019s worth noting that the first accusations against Salazar were made in 2002, when he was still just a priest \u2014 and for whatever reason, they were not investigated.<\/p>\n<p>Two years after that, he became a bishop.<\/p>\n<p>A year after that, the archdiocese first found out about the charges against him.<\/p>\n<p>The rest is history.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Los Angeles Times has the details:\u00a0 The Archdiocese of Los Angeles knew for at least 13 years that one of its bishops had been accused of sexual abuse at a parish but did not inform the public until this week, despite repeated vows to disclose such information.
