I\u2019ve been noticing this myself, and Elizabeth Scalia sums it all up:\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI am so done.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI just can\u2019t anymore.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Some variation of these two phrases are littered throughout the email and private messages I\u2019m getting from fellow Catholics who have been \u201changing in and hanging on\u201d since last summer\u2019s revelations about both the Pennsylvania Grand Jury report and the ongoing saga of former Cardinal, former Archbishop, former priest Theodore McCarrick. Faithful Catholics who have been doggedly\u00a0digging in their heals<\/a>\u00a0and refusing to be driven away from the sacraments despite the\u00a0ongoing and often horrifying<\/a>\u00a0headlines of\u00a0longstanding evil<\/a>\u00a0being tolerated within our Church are suddenly feeling defeated\u2014too overwhelmed to remain as, seemingly every day, there is\u00a0another demoralizing tale<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Church I thought I would never leave again is pushing me away; we are on a break, and I don\u2019t know when I can return,\u201d writes one friend.<\/p>\n

\u201cTreachery\u2014at best,\u201d writes another.<\/p>\n

One friend, made ill by the story of deaf students being\u00a0helplessly victimized by profoundly evil men<\/a>, wondered, \u201cWhat, were these kids not far enough to the margins\u201d to be seen and rescued?<\/p>\n

It was a horrible, and horribly valid, question.<\/p>\n

For the sake of justice and to effect healing, what has been hidden must be revealed, and we shall all have to look at it in stunned disgust. Yes, it is straining our faith. These are difficult, challenging days, and the utter fury roiling through our guts, our hearts, and our minds as we read these stories is understandable. The rage is righteous, and its energy is real.<\/p>\n

Still, all of our anger will count for nothing if we do not channel that energy into action that goes beyond venting on social media and declaring that we\u2019re \u201cdone.\u201d Rather than walking away, we\u2014each one of us\u2014will have to roll up our sleeves and teach the institutional Church how to actually be a church again.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I declare it again today.<\/p>\n
