So that is the fundamental problem,\u201d Cardinal Barreto said. \u201cWe are not going to be discussing \u2018viri probati\u2019 or any other issue if this great problem of climate change overcomes us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Peruvian cardinal was in Rome for a two-day conference sponsored by the general secretariat of the Synod of Bishop centered on the topics that will be discussed at the synod Oct. 6-27.<\/p>\n<p>Cardinal Barreto said that a lack of vocations to the priesthood is a problem that is not limited to remote areas of the Amazon; it is a problem for the church around the world as the number of parishes being closed or merged demonstrates.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, \u201cit isn\u2019t the main issue,\u201d he told CNS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issue is the problem of the irrational exploitation of natural resources endorsed by some governments. I would say that money is behind it in order to use natural resources for the good of a few,\u201d Cardinal Barreto said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re talking about a problem that concerns us all!\u201d he said. \u201cWe cannot be distracted by other problems that, although important, are not priorities.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But then this story popped up today in <a href=\"https:\/\/cruxnow.com\/church-in-the-americas\/2019\/02\/28\/married-priests-will-be-on-agenda-for-the-amazon-synod-theologian-says\/?fbclid=IwAR0Qu7G-Pe-GWFqp7NKqI8fxRXBK5G7J5VJpjkeR_G-iAuloyrJ_o7cCkeI\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Crux:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When the Synod of Bishops on the Amazon rolls around in October, the long-debated possibility of ordaining mature, married men to the priesthood in areas where there are priest shortages will be brought to the table, according to one Brazilian theologian.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to\u00a0<em>Crux<\/em>, Jesuit Father Francisco Taborda, a professor of theology at the Jesuit university in Belo Horizonte, Brazil and an author of numerous books on the sacraments, said one of the primary pastoral challenges in the Amazon region is access to Mass, especially for indigenous populations who often live in rural areas that are difficult to reach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Eucharist is central in the Christian life,\u201d Taborda said, and lamented the fact that many communities in the Amazon only receive the Eucharist at most four times a year, which is \u201ca very big problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a shortage of priests,\u201d he said adding that this can lead \u201cto a re-thinking of how it can be done so that every community\u2026can have the Sunday Eucharist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked if this \u201cre-thinking\u201d included the ordination of so-called\u00a0<em>viri probati<\/em>, meaning mature, married men who are strong in their faith and who would usually be considered as candidates to be ordained deacons, Taborda said \u201cthat\u2019s what this is about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the final analysis, the solution that could be seen is this one,\u201d he said, explaining that the topic will come up in the synod hall.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>???<\/p>\n<p>Stay tuned!<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, that depends on whom you interview and when.
