Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of German Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst, dubbed the \u201cBishop of Bling\u201d, over a scandal regarding his \u20ac31m (\u00a326m, $40m) project to renew a sumptuous diocesan residence in the western small city of Limburg.<\/p>\n

Tebartz-van Elst, whose resignation the Pope has accepted, will be given another assignment in due course according to Vatican sources.<\/p>\n

The Vatican said an inquiry found that he could no longer\u00a0exercise<\/span><\/a>\u00a0his ministry. The pope reportedly said that he hoped that the faithful of Limburg would accept the decision\u00a0with \u201cdocility and willingness to rediscover a climate of\u00a0charity<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and reconciliation\u201d.<\/p>\n

The 53-year-old bishop, who will be replaced by Monsignor Manfred Grothe, indulged on \u00a330,000 for built-in cupboards and carpentry, \u00a383,000 for the windows of the chapel and more than \u00a3371,000 on works of art, using revenue from a religious tax in Germany. He even splurged \u00a312,000 for a bathtub, causing indignation in Germany.<\/p>\n

The project was approved by his predecessor for \u20ac5.5m but the Tebartz-van Elst\u2019s final bill mushroomed to \u20ac31m.<\/p>\n

German\u00a0news<\/span><\/a>\u00a0magazine Der Spiegel headlined with \u201cPimping the diocese\u201d, and even German Chancellor\u00a0Angela<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Merkel said that she hoped \u201cthat there will be an answer for believers, for people\u2019s confidence in their Church\u201d.<\/p>\n

The bishop is also accused of giving false statement in court about an expensive\u00a0flight<\/span><\/a>\u00a0he took to visit India to visit poor communities. That is also the reason why he embarked on a low-cost Ryanair flight to the Vatican last week to make explanations to Pope Francis.<\/p>\n

Bishop Tebartz-van Elst has denied any wrongdoing but has apologised for any \u201ccarelessness or misjudgement on my part\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
