At one point, it describes the journey of a young woman named Di Wang, an atheist:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-para-count=\"346\" data-total-count=\"346\">When they arrived at DePaul two years ago, Ms. Wang and 26 other students from China underwent a three-week orientation before classes began.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-para-count=\"178\" data-total-count=\"7204\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2014\/04\/Y-07JPPAROCHIAL2-master315.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-31061\" title=\"Y-07JPPAROCHIAL2-master315\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2014\/04\/Y-07JPPAROCHIAL2-master315-300x191.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\"><\/a>They got a primer on the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, ate pizza, toured nearby subdivisions and boned up on their English. Then they moved on to Catholicism.<\/p>\n<p data-para-count=\"314\" data-total-count=\"7518\">Bethany Duane-Dacles, a history teacher and director of the school\u2019s summer programs, says the seminars included videos, PowerPoint presentations and props like rosary beads. Students were taught the basics: the Ten Commandments, the hierarchy of the church, how to read the Bible and make the sign of the cross.<\/p>\n<p data-para-count=\"74\" data-total-count=\"7592\">\u201cIf you don\u2019t know who Jesus is, it\u2019s really difficult,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p data-para-count=\"175\" data-total-count=\"7767\">Theology teachers tend to pass fleetingly through sticky terrain. The church\u2019s position on abortion, which directly opposes that of the Chinese government, is one such area.<\/p>\n<p data-para-count=\"168\" data-total-count=\"7935\">Ms. Wang, who plans to attend college in the United States, says she has enjoyed learning about church doctrine, which she sums up like this: \u201cDo good, avoid evil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-para-count=\"280\" data-total-count=\"8215\">Sitting in the school library on a recent morning, donning one of DePaul\u2019s black fleeces, she said her interest did not extend further. She intends to remain an atheist.
