House Minority Leader\u00a0Nancy Pelosi<\/a>\u00a0took the lead this week in a high-profile lobbying effort to pressure San Francisco Archbishop\u00a0Salvatore Cordileone<\/a>\u00a0not to attend the controversial March for Marriage event, which she characterized as \u201cvenom masquerading as\u00a0virtue.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Pelosi, who is one of the country\u2019s most powerful Catholic politicians, made a passionate appeal to the archbishop in a letter obtained by\u00a0The Chronicle<\/a>\u00a0not to participate in the\u00a0National Organization for Marriage<\/a>\u2018s June 19 march on the Supreme Court in\u00a0Washington.<\/p>\n

Cordileone, who is one of the featured speakers at the event, was a leader in the campaign for Proposition 8, the 2008 California anti-gay-marriage\u00a0initiative.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe share our love of the Catholic faith and our city of San Francisco,\u201d Pelosi wrote to Cordileone, who, as head of the 560,000-member Archdiocese of San Francisco, has become the Catholic bishops\u2019 point man against gay marriage. She urged him to abandon an event in which some of the participants show \u201cdisdain and hate towards LGBT\u00a0persons.\u201d<\/p>\n

Invoking the words of Pope Francis with regard to gays and lesbians, she wrote, \u201cIf someone is gay and is searching for the Lord and has good will, then who am I to judge\u00a0him?\u201d<\/p>\n

The goal of the second annual March for Marriage is to draw thousands of supporters of what they call \u201ctraditional marriage\u201d to walk from the U.S Capitol to the Supreme Court. Conservative former presidential candidates\u00a0Mike Huckabee<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Rick Santorum<\/a>, as well as Cordileone, are being billed as the star\u00a0speakers.<\/p>\n

The San Francisco Democratic leader is the most influential in a parade of public figures who have come forward to protest the San Francisco archbishop\u2019s participation in an event that is also backed by the\u00a0Family Research Council<\/a>. Critics have called the organizers \u201chate groups\u201d that are targeting gays and\u00a0lesbians.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
