Sources close to Patti Smith confirmed to The Huffington Post that she will be performing at the Holy See\u2019s Christmas concert this year.<\/p>\n

The iconic rock star is one of 18 acts scheduled to take the stage at the Conciliation Auditorium in Rome on Dec. 13 for the Vatican\u2019s annual\u00a0Concerto di Natale.<\/a><\/p>\n

Anthony DeCurtis, Contributing Editor at Rolling Stone, who is working on a biography of Lou Reed, said the invitation made sense:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe person who did this really understood how Catholic imagery and atmosphere is woven into Patti Smith\u2019s work; and the life or death urgency her work represents \u2014 it\u2019s about salvation and redemption.\u201d<\/p>\n

The news came as a historic church in Naples continues to debate whether or not to let Patti Smith sing at its own concert, according to\u00a0the Italian newspaper Corriere del Mezzogiorno.<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Portosalvo, a Catholic association, has asked the Archbishop of Naples to ban Smith from performing at the Basilica of San Giovanni Maggiore,\u00a0reportedly<\/a>\u00a0calling it \u201cblasphemous.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith met the Pope in person in St. Peter\u2019s Square last year, saying afterwards that the pontiff was \u201cvery interesting\u201d and that she \u201cliked him a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2026Other stars in the lineup include Sister Cristina, the singing nun who stole the top prize at Italy\u2019s \u201cThe Voice.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
