It has boat-chomping crocodiles, 400,000 digitally rendered Hebrew slaves and a sword-wielding Christian Bale as a \u201cGladiator\u201d-like Moses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"33\" data-total-count=\"295\">But God may still steal the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"443\" data-total-count=\"738\"><a class=\"meta-objTitle decorated-link\" style=\"color: #326891;\" href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/gst\/movies\/titlelist.html?v_idlist=16326;302624&amp;inline=nyt_ttl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cExodus,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0to be released on Dec. 12, preserves the awful severity of the Old Testament God \u2014 one who commands and demands \u2014 and does it all within the persona of a willful child. Mr. Scott uses an 11-year-old British actor, Isaac Andrews, to give voice and visage to his Almighty, rather than concealing the deity behind a pillar of fire, too terrible for the eye of man, as Cecil B. DeMille chose to do in his \u201cTen Commandments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"204\" data-total-count=\"942\">And it is Mr. Andrews \u2014 stern-eyed, impatient, at times vaguely angelic and at times \u201cChildren of the Corn\u201d terrifying \u2014 who is already beginning to challenge those who take their Bible seriously.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-2\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"396\" data-total-count=\"1338\">\u201cIt would be difficult for anyone who has any relationship with God and the Scripture to say this is O.K.,\u201d said Chris Stone, a marketing consultant. His company, Faith Driven Consumer, helps to connect products, including movies, with observant Christians. The company was rebuffed, Mr. Stone said by way of disclosure, when it sought to become an adviser to the film, which he has not seen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"396\" data-total-count=\"1338\">\u2026Gary A. Rendsburg, a professor of Jewish studies at Rutgers University, said last week that he could immediately think of only one Old Testament reference that might support the notion of God as a young innocent. That is a very brief reference in the first Book of Kings, Chapter 19, in which God speaks to Elijah in what is described as a \u201cstill small voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"365\" data-total-count=\"2411\">In the Book of Exodus, Mr. Rendsburg said, God is neither man nor spirit, but rather \u201ca character\u201d who still has manlike traits by which much older generations understood him. \u201cHe\u2019s very conversational, and you can still have a one-on-one with him,\u201d said Mr. Rendsburg \u2014 though he noted, per Exodus, Chapter 33, that to look upon God would kill a human.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"121\" data-total-count=\"2532\">The Hollywood Reporter in mid-November\u00a0<a style=\"color: #326891;\" title=\"The report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/exodus-how-ridley-scott-chose-748373\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">published a report<\/a>\u00a0identifying Mr. Andrews as the avatar for God in \u201cExodus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"208\" data-total-count=\"2740\">Speaking on Tuesday from Budapest, where he is filming another movie, \u201cThe Martian,\u201d Mr. Scott said he trusted his \u201cgut\u201d in deciding to have God speak through what he imagines might be a shepherd boy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"111\" data-total-count=\"2851\">\u201cI want to avoid the clich\u00e9s,\u201d said Mr. Scott, who added that a voice from the clouds was never an option.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"111\" data-total-count=\"2851\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/11\/29\/movies\/exodus-gods-and-kings-portrays-the-deity-as-a-boy.html?hpw&amp;rref=movies&amp;action=click&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;module=well-region&amp;region=bottom-well&amp;WT.nav=bottom-well\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Read on.\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"111\" data-total-count=\"2851\">As a footnote: The Hollywood Reporter has just published the first review of the film. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/review\/exodus-gods-kings-film-review-752338\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u00a0<strong>Regarding the God-as-boy casting choice:\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">Although this may offend some devout viewers, it\u2019s actually far more interesting than the booming offscreen voice that DeMille used in his version of the story.\u00a0 This divine child seems angry and vengeful rather than a benign Buddha figure, but one could argue that this is in keeping with the Old Testament God of wrath.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">The film hits its peak in the sequence recounting the ten plagues.\u00a0 The savage crocodiles were not in the Old Testament, but as they attack humans as well as fish, they turn the Nile blood red, which is at least an ingenious explanation of how the river might have turned to blood.\u00a0 Frogs, boils, and locusts are truer to the text and are rendered in luscious visual detail.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">The climactic chase to the Red Sea is equally spectacular.\u00a0 Although\u00a0<em>The Ten Commandments<\/em>\u00a0won the Oscar for its visual effects, the parting of the Red Sea in DeMille\u2019s film was laughably tacky.\u00a0 Scott comes up with a somewhat more credible portrayal of how the Israelites managed to cross the sea before a monumental storm drowned the Egyptians.\u00a0 This sequence is visually thrilling.\u00a0 The movie should have ended there, but Scott and the writers seem to have felt obliged to include a few of the later parts of the story, including the delivery of the Ten Commandments and a scene of an aged Moses finally arriving near the land of Canaan.\u00a0 But while these events are integral to the Biblical story, they come off here as the worst kind of anticlimax.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The New York Times:\u00a0 Ridley Scott\u2019s 3-D \u201cExodus: Gods and Kings\u201d has computer-generated plagues, waves and tornadoes.
