{"id":44299,"date":"2015-04-14T17:36:15","date_gmt":"2015-04-14T21:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/deaconsbench\/?p=44299"},"modified":"2015-04-14T22:40:34","modified_gmt":"2015-04-15T02:40:34","slug":"journey-to-jordan-seeing-at-last-where-everything-really-began","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/deaconsbench\/2015\/04\/journey-to-jordan-seeing-at-last-where-everything-really-began\/","title":{"rendered":"Journey to Jordan: seeing, at last, where everything really began"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Tuesday morning we were up bright and early to pack our bags and head out the door, leaving Amman behind and heading into the wilderness: Bethany, where Jesus was baptized.<\/p>\n<p>But first: breakfast.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0741.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44300\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0741-575x384.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0741\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We departed the Sheraton a little before 9 and headed up the road to Bethany, about an hour away.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way, we hit a traffic jam.<\/p>\n<p>Evidently, it was rush hour.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0746.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44301\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0746-575x384.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0746\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0754.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44302\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0754-575x380.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0754\" width=\"575\" height=\"380\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We arrived at the site of Jesus\u2019s baptism and stretched our legs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0753.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44303\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0753-575x384.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0753\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We were greeted by Rustom Mkhjian, Assistant Commission Director of the Baptism Site. He\u2019s a man of tremendous passion, knowledge and faith, and proved to be a wonderful guide for our morning visit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0756.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44304\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0756-575x384.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0756\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He showed us the cave where archeologists believe John the Baptist lived\u2014and he made a persuasive and compelling case for this site we were touring being <strong>the actual place<\/strong> of Christ\u2019s baptism. It has been a pilgrimage destination\u00a0since the dawn of Christianity\u2014a place where churches were erected and memorials were built. People have been baptized here, in pools like the one below, since the 4th century.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0775.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44318\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0775-575x384.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0775\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We also saw the remnants of a monastery which was constructed so that monks could live out their lives just a few steps from\u00a0where Christ\u2019s ministry\u2014and the whole Christian story\u2014actually began.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0765.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44305\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0765-575x384.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0765\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The gospel tells us that Jesus asked his followers, \u201cWhat did you come out to the desert to see? A reed swaying in the wind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To our amazement, we saw exactly what he was talking about. The area is surrounded by swaying reeds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0766.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44306\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0766-575x384.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0766\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, we followed a winding path to one particularly unusual spot.\u00a0Rustom explained that the course of the Jordan River has changed over the centuries, thanks to earthquakes and droughts. But research and archeological excavation have uncovered the remains of a massive Byzantine church, with stairs leading from the apse down into the Jordan at a place where the waters form a cross.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0787.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44307\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0787-575x384.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0787\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was the site of pilgrimage from the earliest days of Christianity. All signs point to this being the place where Christ began his public ministry. This is where the Son of God was baptized.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0814.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44317\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0814-575x384.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0814\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The surrounding area, meantime, is slowly being developed into a place for research, prayer and preservation\u2014with efforts under way to maintain the original character of the site. Several Christian denominations, with the blessing of Jordan\u2019s Muslim king, have erected large churches near the site. We visited a Latin rite Catholic church that has been under construction for a few years. When completed, it will be stunning: the largest church in Jordan.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0800.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44308\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0800-575x384.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0800\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0803.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44309\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0803-575x384.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0803\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A short walk away is a popular place for baptisms. People can buy special tee shirts and wade into the water. (Although, why anyone would want to wade into that brown stream is a mystery to me.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0793.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44310\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2015\/04\/IMG_0793-575x384.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0793\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just across the Jordan river, we saw a group of Orthodox sliding\u00a0into the mucky water, with people submerging themselves three times\u2014not only a reminder of the Trinity, but also an explicit reference to Christ\u2019s death, burial and resurrection.<\/p>\n<p>I captured some of this on video, below.<\/p>\n<p><script>\/\/ <![CDATA[\n(function(d, s, id) {  var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];  if (d.getElementById(id)) return;  js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id;  js.src = \"\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js#xfbml=1&#038;version=v2.3\";  fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));\n\/\/ ]]><\/script><\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-video\" data-allowfullscreen=\"true\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/video.php?v=10205808758070619&amp;set=vb.1007159838&amp;type=1\">\n<div class=\"fb-xfbml-parse-ignore\">\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/video.php?v=10205808758070619\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Baptism in Jordan River, 2015\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tjGRP_6YG3w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>All in all, this was a memorable visit to one of the most important places in the world\u2014the place where Jesus began his ministry, and where the ritual that defines all Christians was first carried out. Our faith was born in the wilderness. This was an extraordinary opportunity to visit that very wilderness and, in some small way, offer a quiet prayer of gratitude.<\/p>\n<p>I often tell\u00a0parents when I preach at baptisms: \u201cTake lots of pictures. Remember this day forever.
