The Kansas City Star<\/a><\/strong> has done a remarkable job of digging into this headline-making priest<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s early life, including his childhood and years in the seminary:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Records from Conception Seminary College in Conception, Mo., show that Ratigan entered the school as a freshman undergraduate in 1996, 12 years after he graduated from high school. And though he said later that he\u2019d worried about whether he could do the work, he graduated on schedule in 2000. Ratigan later joined Conception\u2019s Board of Regents with about 30 others, including Finn.<\/p>\n

Ratigan followed his work at Conception with four years of graduate theological studies at Mundelein Seminary near Chicago.<\/p>\n

After his ordination in Kansas City on June 4, 2004, Ratigan joined St. Thomas More parish in Kansas City as associate pastor. Cahill remembered him as always being present for church events.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was very outgoing,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was a time when the parish needed that sense of involvement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Only in retrospect, she said, did she realize that he carried a camera to every event.<\/p>\n

And while at St. Thomas More, Ratigan met and became friends with Michele Kerwin and her family.<\/p>\n

He taught her daughter knock-knock jokes and would engage Kerwin in long, good-natured theological debates.<\/p>\n

\u201cShawn was conservative,\u201d Kerwin recalled. \u201cHe would say, \u2018There was a wrong way and the church\u2019s way.\u2019 I would say to him, \u2018The church was not always right.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cHe would say, \u2018Michele, you just have to trust the church.\u2019\u2002\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
