{"id":5766,"date":"2011-07-31T15:52:52","date_gmt":"2011-07-31T19:52:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/community\/deaconsbench\/?p=5766"},"modified":"2016-09-30T17:40:13","modified_gmt":"2016-09-30T21:40:13","slug":"a-cardboard-cathedral-for-new-zealand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/deaconsbench\/2011\/07\/a-cardboard-cathedral-for-new-zealand\/","title":{"rendered":"A &quot;cardboard cathedral&quot; for New Zealand?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>The innovative design for a temporary structure \u2014 that could serve as Christchurch\u2019s cathedral for several years \u2014 was unveiled yesterday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.patheos.com\/community\/sites\/56\/2011\/07\/5367515-1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5767\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.patheos.com\/community\/sites\/56\/2011\/07\/5367515-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"433\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.3news.co.nz\/Unconventional-Cathedral-design-revealed\/tabid\/423\/articleID\/220602\/Default.aspx\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Details: <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Christchurch leaders have revealed the unconventional design they  want to use for the city\u2019s temporary Cathedral and it is made out of  cardboard.<\/p>\n<p>They hope to have it built by the first anniversary of this year\u2019s major earthquake.<\/p>\n<p>The  design has been presented by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, who is  known for building temporary structures after natural disasters.<\/p>\n<p>A church he built in Kobe,  Japan, after the 1995 earthquake served the Catholic community there for eleven years.<\/p>\n<p>Christchurch\u2019s  temporary Cathedral would be built from a combination of reinforced,  waterproofed cardboard and shipping containers. This would allow it to  be easily relocated or recycled once the permanent church is completed.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ban\u2019s design, which he hopes to build with the help of local students, has got church and city leaders excited.<\/p>\n<p>Reverend Peter Beck, the ChristChurch Cathedral dean, says the design has a nice feel about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s  almost tent-like, and I like the idea of pitching our tent,\u201d says Mr  Beck. \u201cIt\u2019s a very Christian concept actually; pitching our tent in the  middle of the city. It\u2019s almost got a marae essence about it too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christchurch mayor Bob Parker says the design is a physical way of showing hope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could be a multi-purpose space too, so that it might actually help us with orchestras, choirs, and other things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ban says although they are not meant to be permanent, his cardboard designs are built to last.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven the building made in paper can be permanent, as long as people love it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The church and the council are still searching for a suitable location for the temporary church.<\/p>\n<p>At an estimated cost of $4 million, even cardboard does not come cheap.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The innovative design for a temporary structure \u2014 that could serve as Christchurch\u2019s cathedral for several years \u2014 was unveiled yesterday.
