Deacons have their place but they are not an alter Christus. They are not intended to be a substitute for the priesthood.<\/p>\n
Yes, yes, yes, I know that the Church allows permanent deacons\u00a0to preside at weddings, baptisms and\u00a0funeral home services but most people look at the diaconate\u00a0and \u00a0just see\u00a0nice\u00a0old men\u00a0\u00a0who do all the scut work\u00a0so that the priest\u00a0has\u00a0more time to devote to the sacraments.\u00a0Other people are quite frank about their distaste for what they see is as laymen playing priest. Deacons who find these perceptions offensive should either shrug their shoulders and carry on or lobby for their pastor\u00a0to launch a\u00a0 teaching project telling\u00a0 the folks in the pews what deacons have permission to do.<\/p>\n
