Martha Hennessy is a soft-spoken woman, but her actions certainly are not.<\/p>\n

She spoke on Monday in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union, giving a speech\u00a0titled \u201cInspiration for the 21st Century Radical\u201d in which she discussed her life\u00a0within the Catholic Worker movement.<\/p>\n

Hennessy\u2019s grandmother, Dorothy Day, was a cofounder for the newspaper\u00a0the Catholic Worker. Day helped create this paper in 1933. The newspaper\u00a0focused on \u201cthe dignity of every person,\u201d just as the movement continues to do\u00a0today.<\/p>\n

There are currently 185 Catholic Worker Communities in the world. These\u00a0communities contain Catholic Worker houses, which strive to help the community,\u00a0the poor, and according to the Catholic Worker movement website, \u201cresist war and\u00a0social injustice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>As a strong participant in the Catholic Worker movement, Hennessy\u00a0volunteers her time to helping those in need as well as protesting issues she feels\u00a0most strongly about.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe beauty of the model [of the Catholic Worker movement] is in its\u00a0tolerance and it\u2019s diversity,\u201d said Hennessy, who currently volunteers most of her\u00a0time to Maryhouse, a Catholic Worker house, in New York.<\/p>\n

Aside from her work with aiding the poor, Hennessy has also given much\u00a0of her time to protesting. Though there are multiple issues that Hennessy stands behind, she focused on the issue of torture and the Guantanamo Bay prison camps\u00a0in her speech. Hennessy has served time in jail for her participation in nonviolent\u00a0protests.<\/p>\n

Hennessy\u2019s life may be focused on her faith now, but that\u2019s not how it always\u00a0has been. \u201cI was caught up in the human errors and inadequacies of the\u00a0church \u2026 I have been out of the Catholic Church for most of my adult life.\u201d Hennessy\u00a0returned to the church and the Catholic Worker movement in 2004. \u201cIt brought\u00a0awareness and awakening to my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

A class from Ames High was in attendance, as well as many students\u00a0currently enrolled in several of the religious studies courses here at Iowa State.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought it was very interesting,\u201d said Sarah Langel, freshman in kinesiology\u00a0and health, \u201cI never really realized the work that [the Catholic Worker\u2019s] do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also in attendance was Alice McGary, a worker at the Mustard Seed Community Farm, a type of Catholic Worker house that grows food for local food\u00a0pantries in Ames. \u201cI resonate with all of the basic beliefs of the movement,\u201d McGary said, who herself has been involved with the movement for 14 years.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
