This just in, from the USCCB:<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

A new introduction to the U.S. bishops\u2019 document on political responsibility reminds Catholics that some issues \u201cinvolve the clear obligation to oppose intrinsic evils which can never be justified,\u201d while others \u201crequire action to pursue justice and promote the common good.\u201d<\/p>\n

The brief Introductory Note to the 2011 reissue of \u201cForming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship\u201d was signed by the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the chairmen of nine USCCB committees. It was approved by the bishops\u2019 Administrative Committee at its mid-September meeting and made public Oct. 4.<\/p>\n

The introduction says that \u201cFaithful Citizenship,\u201d one in a series of documents that have been issued before every presidential election for nearly 35 years, \u201chas at times been misused to present an incomplete or distorted view of the demands of faith in politics\u201d but \u201cremains a faithful and challenging call to discipleship in the world of politics.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt does not offer a voters guide, scorecard of issues or direction on how to vote,\u201d the introduction adds. \u201cIt applies Catholic moral principles to a range of important issues and warns against misguided appeals to \u2018conscience\u2019 to ignore fundamental moral claims, to reduce Catholic moral concerns to one or two matters, or to justify choices simply to advance partisan, ideological or personal interests.\u201d<\/p>\n

The introduction lists six \u201ccurrent and fundamental problems, some involving opposition to intrinsic evils and others raising serious moral questions:\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014 Abortion \u201cand other threats to the lives and dignity of others who are vulnerable, sick or unwanted.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014 Conscience threats to Catholic ministries in health care, education and social services.<\/p>\n

\u2014 \u201cIntensifying efforts to redefine marriage\u201d or to undermine it as \u201cthe permanent, faithful and fruitful union of one man and one woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014 An economic crisis that has increased national and global unemployment, poverty and hunger, requiring efforts to \u201cprotect those who are poor and vulnerable as well as future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014 \u201cThe failure to repair a broken immigration system.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014 \u201cSerious moral questions\u201d raised by wars, terror and violence, \u201cparticularly the absence of justice, security and peace in the Holy Land and throughout the Middle East.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
