Ten men were ordained to serve the Archdiocese of Detroit as permanent deacons last Saturday, Oct. 1, by Archbishop Allen Vigneron.<\/p>\n

The Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament<\/a> in Detroit was filled to capacity with the families and friends of the new deacon ordinandi, as well as deacons, priests and prelates of the archdiocese.<\/p>\n

In his homily, Archbishop Vigneron spoke of the ministry of the deacon in the Church, citing first the deacon\u2019s teaching ministry, as when he proclaims the Gospel at Mass.<\/p>\n

He reminded them that they have become \u201cspokesmen for God\u201d not only through the work they did studying for their ordination, \u201cbut by God\u2019s action.\u201d<\/p>\n

Turning to the deacon\u2019s ministry of service, the archbishop said it is not just a matter of working to make things a bit better, but springs from \u201cthe love that lives in the very heart of God.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat you do on your own and what you lead the people of God in doing is an instance and manifestation of the love that exists among the Holy Trinity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

But then Archbishop Vigneron spoke of the deacon\u2019s sacramental ministry and of its importance, for \u201cliturgy is the source and summit of the Church\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n

He touched on the deacon\u2019s role in conducting baptisms and serving as \u201ca solemn witness of the Church\u201d at weddings, saying, \u201cWhat are these, but proclamations that God has come into the world in His Son, Jesus Christ, and has made it a new creation?\u201d<\/p>\n

The archbishop focused, however, on \u201cone particular ministry\u201d of the deacon \u2013 serving as \u201ccustodian and minister of the cup of the Precious Blood\u201d at Mass.<\/p>\n

Calling the chalice of Precious Blood the \u201cmost elegant sign\u201d of Christ\u2019s saying that \u201cGreater love has no man than this: that he lay down his life for his friends,\u201d Archbishop Vigneron told the new deacons, \u201cYou are associates of Jesus Christ in administering His love.\u201d<\/p>\n

He commended the faithful examples of the martyrs St. Lawrence and St. Stephen to the new deacons, and noting that they were being ordained on the feast of St. Therese of Lisieux, said, \u201cWas she not excellent in her service of the Word, not only in her speech, but in her ministry of charity? Ask her how you can be ministers of charity.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
