Last month, when it was announced that Caitlyn (nee Bruce) Jenner would receive the prestigious Arthur Ashe Courage Award from ESPN, I surveyed the remarkable life of Ashe and noted:<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

It has to be said: \u00a0bestowing this prize on the likes of Caitlyn Jenner\u2014whose life is now a clanging carnival of self-promotion, gossip, publicity stunts and reality TV hucksterism\u2014\u00a0insults the memory of the truly courageous man for whom it is named.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But wait. Now, there\u2019s more:<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to an insider, Jenner\u2019s reps approached the network suggesting she receive the award \u2014 and offering PR plugs on her upcoming docuseries in return.<\/p>\n

According to an insider, negotiations started as Jenner\u2019s publicist was finalizing the terms of her interview with\u00a0Diane Sawyer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Her agents approached ESPN, which is owned by Disney like Sawyer\u2019s ABC, \u201cand they suggested that she receive the Arthur Ashe award,\u201d the source claimed. \u201cIt was a brilliant move\u00a0because the executives at ESPN loved the idea, and immediately began making sure it got done. Caitlyn\u2019s journey to accepting the award will also be featured on her upcoming reality show,\u00a0I am Cait.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a hiccup during the talks about Caitlyn receiving the award, and her reps were prepared to pull her interview with Diane Sawyer if she didn\u2019t get it,\u201d the source said. \u201cIt was ironed out, and ABC owns one of the\u00a0biggest stories of the year.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

ESPN, however, denies\u00a0it:<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Jenner\u2019s publicist Alan Nierob\u00a0called the report<\/a>\u00a0\u201cutterly false\u201d and\u00a0ESPN has denied the report\u2019s veracity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat rumor is completely false,\u201d ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said. \u201cThe Arthur Ashe Courage Award and ABC interview were never connected.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
