Former New York Times editor\u00a0Bill Keller sat down for an interview at the LBJ Library last week<\/a> and discussed the Times\u2019 editorial stance when covering hotly contested social issues. In a forthright admission,\u00a0Keller openly described the paper as \u201csocially liberal.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Keller, who stepped down as Executive Editor<\/a> of the New York Times and was replaced by the Times\u2019 managing director Jill Abramson in June 2011, rejoined the paper as a senior writer and Op-Ed columnist. Keller is responsible for adding the\u00a0Public Editor<\/em> position to the New York Times staff. He recalled\u00a0a famous 2004 column by Daniel Okrent, the first man to hold the title<\/a>. The column had a simple answer to whether or not the Times is liberal: \u201cof course.\u201d Okrent\u2019s more nuanced take was that the Times reflects its New York base, and thus takes a more cosmopolitan and liberal view of some divisive social and cultural issues.<\/p>\n

Keller essentially agreed with this. He said, \u201cwe are liberal in the sense that we are open-minded, tolerant, urban. Our wedding page includes \u2014 and did even before New York had a gay marriage law \u2014 included gay unions. So we\u2019re liberal in that sense. Socially liberal.\u201d He also said that the paper \u201ctreats evolution as a fact.\u201d<\/p>\n

Keller\u2019s comments contrast somewhat with those of Abramson. When she officially assumed the Executive Editor position in early September,\u00a0dismissed the Times\u2019\u00a0liberal<\/em> label<\/a>. \u201cJournalists in the newsroom play it straight,\u201d she told The Daily Beast\u2019s Howard Kurtz.<\/p>\n

She reiterated this point when\u00a0speaking with Times\u2019 public editor, Arthur S. Brisbane<\/a>. When asked if she will oblige with \u201clegendary Times executive editor A. M. Rosenthal\u201d who \u201cfelt the need to steer The Times to the right to compensate for the leftward political leanings of some staff,\u201d she pointed to the general political leanings of New York that might impact reporters\u2019 perspectives, rather than reporters personal political leanings.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
