The Catholic Review, which has chronicled Catholic life in Baltimore for nearly two centuries, will stop publishing in its traditional newspaper format and become a glossy monthly magazine.<\/p>\n

The Oct. 29 issue will be its last as a biweekly newspaper, editor and associate publisher Chris Gunty said Wednesday. The first issue of the magazine is to arrive in the mailboxes of about 170,000 Maryland households shortly before Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n

The changes come as most print publications suffer declines in circulation and advertising revenue, much of it precipitated by competition from the Internet.<\/p>\n

Gunty said they reflect an ongoing effort to remain flexible, significant and widely read as the habits of news consumers evolve.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not in the in newspaper business, we\u2019re in the news business,\u201d he said. \u201cThe question is, how do we reach people in a landscape that\u2019s changing even as we speak? We\u2019re continuing to look for ways to stay relevant and to spread the church\u2019s message to as many people as we can.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Catholic Review is published by the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Its publisher is Archbishop William E. Lori.<\/p>\n

Gunty said the magazine will spotlight in-depth feature articles, local and national columns, and some of the more popular features of the newspaper, including Review in the Pew, which serves up bits of news in a quickly read format.<\/p>\n

Readers will be able to follow daily Catholic news on the publication\u2019s free website, Gunty said, creating a blend he described as \u201cthe best of both digital and print.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Catholic Review, which traces its origins to 1833, will also continue to connect with readers through its Twitter, Facebook and Instagram platforms.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
