Time for my annual reminder about chanting the date of Easter.<\/p>\n

From a post I published\u00a0last year:\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

A lot of places have stopped doing this brief,\u00a0two minute chant, traditionally sung on Epiphany; a visiting priest who heard me do it last January was amazed. \u201cI\u2019ve never heard that before, anywhere,\u201d he said. But my parish also does arcane bits of liturgy like the Blessing of Chalk <\/a><\/strong>and marking the church portal with the initials of the wise men. (That ritual is getting harder to repeat every year \u2014 nobody uses chalk anymore! It\u2019s hard to find.)<\/p>\n

A little background for you:<\/p>\n

While a day like Christmas is fixed in our minds and on the calendars on\u00a0<\/em>December 25th, many of the important feasts of the Church year move, based\u00a0<\/em>upon the date that Easter is set. Easter changes each year moving to the Sunday\u00a0<\/em>after the \u201cPaschal Full Moon,\u201d and can fall between March 22 and April 25.<\/em><\/p>\n

In ancient times before calendars were common, most people did not know the\u00a0<\/em>dates for the upcoming Liturgical year. On Epiphany Sunday, the upcoming\u00a0<\/em>dates were \u201cproclaimed\u201d. After the singing of the Gospel, a Deacon or cantor, in keeping with an ancient\u00a0<\/em>practice of Holy Church, announces from the ambo the moveable feasts of the current year according to\u00a0<\/em>* this formula:<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Know, dear brethren (brothers and sisters),
\nthat, as we have rejoiced at the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ,
\nso by leave of God\u2019s mercy
\nwe announce to you also the joy of his Resurrection,
\nwho is our Savior.<\/p>\n

On the\u00a0fourteenth<\/strong>\u00a0day of\u00a0February<\/strong>\u00a0will fall Ash Wednesday,
\nand the beginning of the fast of the most sacred Lenten season.<\/p>\n

On the\u00a0first<\/strong>\u00a0day of\u00a0April<\/strong>\u00a0you will celebrate with joy Easter Day,
\nthe Paschal feast of our Lord Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

[In those places where the Ascension is observed on Thursday:<\/em>
\nOn the\u00a0tenth\u00a0<\/strong>day of\u00a0May<\/strong>\u00a0will be the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ.]<\/em><\/p>\n

[In those places where the Ascension is transferred to the Seventh Sunday of Easter:<\/em>
\nOn the\u00a0thirteenth\u00a0<\/strong>day of\u00a0May\u00a0<\/strong>will be the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ.]<\/em><\/p>\n

On the\u00a0twentieth\u00a0<\/strong>day of\u00a0May<\/strong>, the feast of Pentecost.<\/p>\n

On the\u00a0third\u00a0<\/strong>day of\u00a0June\u00a0<\/strong>the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ.<\/p>\n

On the\u00a0second\u00a0<\/strong>day of\u00a0December<\/strong>, the First Sunday of the Advent of our Lord Jesus Christ,
\nto whom is honor and glory for ever and ever.
