Some of you may remember the rather sensational story from last year, about a woman priest in New York City who was attacked with acid.<\/a><\/strong> Reports at the time hinted\u00a0it may have been a hate crime, committed by someone opposed to the ordination of women\u2014a narrative that the Women Priests encouraged in at least one early media account:<\/p>\n

[Spokesperson for Roman Catholic Women Priests] Jennifer O\u2019Malley feels that all the good work in the world can\u2019t change the horrible fact that some people can\u2019t stomach seeing a woman in the priesthood.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s certainly people that are very orthodox Catholics that are certainly unhappy with what we\u2019re doing,\u201d she said. \u201cWe are breaking Canon Law 1024, which says only a baptized male can be a priest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rather than go along with the church, though, O\u2019Malley says the Womenpriests movement believes the law is oppressive and deserves to be abolished.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

O\u2019Malley changed her tune in a later interview with the National Catholic Reporter, and said she didn\u2019t think it was a \u201ctheological hate crime\u201d after all.<\/p>\n

Turns out, it wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Following his investigation, the DA has this:\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

A man who burned a \u200bfemale Q\u200bueens priest by throwing an acid-like liquid in her face<\/a>\u00a0committed the gruesome crime as part of a cover-up \u200bof an embezzlement scheme at a non-profit,\u200bthe Queens district attorney said Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Jerry Mohammed, 32 \u2014 who is accused of attacking ordained priest Alexandra Dyer\u200b \u2014 a member of the sect Roman Catholic Womenpriests \u200band\u200b executive director of the Healing Arts Initiative \u200b\u2013 in August. He allegedly schemed with a former employee of the non-profit who fleeced $750,000 from the group, law enforcement sources said.<\/p>\n

Mohammed and Kim Williams, 47 \u2014 a former accountant for the group \u2014 plotted the attack on Dyer to \u200bdistract from the theft and apparently make it look as if a hardened thug had stolen the money instead of her, according to law enforcement sources.<\/p>\n

Pia Louallen, 41, a close friend of the allegedly twisted numbers cruncher, worked with Williams and pocketed $150,000 between 2013 and 2015, law enforcement sources said.<\/p>\n
