Last Friday, the\u00a0Council on Foreign Relations<\/a>\u00a0brought together three leading\u00a0 Catholic<\/a>\u00a0experts to discuss\u00a0 Pope Francis<\/a>\u00a0ahead of his upcoming (and first) visit to the United States. \u00a0 Deily<\/a> was invited to join the conversation led\u00a0by\u00a0 Katherine Marshall<\/a>,\u00a0Senior Fellow and Professor at the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs at Georgetown University. \u00a0The experts included\u00a0 Kurt Martens<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Associate Professor of Canon Law at the Catholic University of America,\u00a0 Fr.\u00a0<\/a>Thomas J. Reese<\/a>, S<\/span>enior Analyst for\u00a0National Catholic Reporter, and\u00a0 John Thavis<\/a>, a<\/span>uthor of\u00a0The Vatican Diaries.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ms. Marshall began\u00a0by asking Fr. Reese about\u00a0the agenda\u00a0for the Pope\u2019s U.S. visit. Fr. Reese responded that \u201che is coming both as a pastor, and also as a prophet.. it is part of his job description as Pope\u2026 he comes to speak truth to power.\u201d \u00a0Mr.\u00a0Thavis made it clear that the Pope was not coming to the U.S. to \u201clecture\u201d, but to \u201clearn\u201d from the American people. \u00a0However he reiterated\u00a0that Francis is \u201cnot scared to cut through the red tape and make new rules\u201d. \u00a0Dr. Martens agreed that \u201cno one is going to be happy afterwards\u201d, referring to the Pope\u2019s history of stirring up controversy with his unscripted remarks.<\/p>\n

Ms. Marshall then posed the question as to whether the Pope\u2019s visit could constitute another\u00a0\u201cCairo moment\u201d, referring to President Obama\u2019s 2009 speech in Cairo, Egypt, which facilitated\u00a0unprecedented cooperation between world leaders. \u00a0All the experts agreed that this is a moment where the Pope can influence world events because he is so universally popular. \u00a0This dynamic has not been the case\u00a0since\u00a0 Pope John Paul II<\/a>\u00a0and his role in meditating between the U.S. and Communist Russia. \u00a0For his part, Pope Francis has been crucial in\u00a0helping normalize political relations between the United States and Cuba.<\/p>\n

All the experts speculated as to whether or not the Pope would deviate from his pre-approved scripts in his addresses to Congress, the United Nations General Assembly, or the World Meeting of Families (see his official schedule\u00a0 here<\/a>). \u00a0Mr. Thavis concluded that \u201canything can happen with this Pope\u201d and that \u201chis blunt language is part of the reason he is so popular\u201d. \u00a0The floor was then opened to questions from the audience surrounding Francis and\u00a0the\u00a0future of the Church, specifically on\u00a0the role of millennials<\/a>, women\u2019s ordination<\/a>, and the Pope\u2019s controversial remarks on homosexuality<\/a>.<\/p>\n
