Fire is safety. \u00a0It holds the light and the heat that we need to survive.<\/p>\n

Fire is chaos. \u00a0Its dance is ever-changing and it is inherently dangerous.<\/p>\n

Fire is hungry.\u00a0 It consumes what it wants and leaves behind a memory of what has been.<\/p>\n

Fire is final. \u00a0What is taken in by fire never returns to its original shape.<\/p>\n

$\"holly$ <\/a>Tonight we will attend a ritual at the home of some friends, a ritual that may or may not come down from antiquity. \u00a0The \u2018traditional-ness\u2019 of it isn\u2019t really important.\u00a0 These folks have been doing it for a while and it is big and beautiful and intense and more importantly, effective.<\/p>\n

Throughout this day, our friend will pull wood from scraps of this year\u2019s projects, wood from the downed trees, wood brought by kin to be part of this magick. \u00a0With his own hands and skill, he will build a Holly King: \u00a010\u2032, 15\u2032, 20\u2032 tall. \u00a0The King\u2019s\u00a0shape\u00a0is always different, just like his reign.<\/p>\n

If you are of a logical mind, you might\u00a0enjoy it as a\u00a0miracle of engineering. \u00a0If you are a musician, the sounds made by the crackling flames may enchant you. \u00a0If you are an artist, let the beauty of the light flow into you and awaken your creativity. \u00a0(Not that these things are mutually exclusive\u2026)<\/p>\n

If you are a human who is aware of the movement of sun and sea and sky; if you feel the difference between this day and other days; if the new $\"holly$ <\/a>year to you simply means a new calendar, the Fire is for you. \u00a0If you are so very done with what is behind you and so very ready for what is before you, the Fire is for you. \u00a0If you are courageous enough to commit to releasing what has held you back; if you are ready to turn away from your contemplation of the Shadow and turn to a recognition of the\u00a0Light; the Fire is for you.<\/p>\n

If you have loved ones to share it with,\u00a0or if you are alone, build your own King, of branches and twigs, or popsicle sticks or toothpicks! \u00a0Amaze yourself with your tiny creation. \u00a0Give Him your old year, what is past, with words or songs or images. \u00a0Then flick your fingers to make the Fire. \u00a0Watch the burning. \u00a0Breathe. \u00a0Watch the burning. \u00a0Release. \u00a0Watch the burning. \u00a0Be relieved of your burdens.<\/p>\n
