Ricky Gervais Gets in a Twitter Fight

Ricky Gervais Gets in a Twitter Fight December 27, 2011

There’s been an amusing little battle going on between Ricky Gervais and some fundie wingnuts on Twitter over his support for gay rights and acceptance of evolution. A lot of it was just stupid juvenile taunts from some guy named Keith, who tweets under the name GodsWordIsLaw, with Gervais responding with far more civility and kindness than I would have. A few examples from Keith:

Atheists are of Satan, not God. …

God’s land, God’s laws. Bow to your creator.

Homosexuals are of Satan, not God. It’s why homosexuals refuse to change their deviancy, Satan’s grip is too strong.

Oh hell, the Little Sodomites are attacking my mentions again. Theyre even worse than the demented @RickyGervais followers.

@tobeymonster That’s because you’re sick in the head. A symptom of your homosexuality?

U WERENT BORN THIS WAY. You were conditioned by Lady Satan to act on your unnatural homosexual impulses. http://Narth.org can help u!

@jacko2255 You were most likely molested as a child but can’t remember it.

@LewBerryJuice Youre homosexual arent you? Most atheists are because they’re angry God doesnt approve of their lifestyle.

In the eyes of God, sexual sinners (prostitutes, homosexuals etc) are worse than the likes of murderers because they’re PROUD of their sins

It goes on and on and on like that. But he really brings the stupid when he tries to take on evolution:

@Dr_Nikolai So why did blacks only semi evolve? Theyre at least a few hundred thousand years behind, no? I dont get your logic.

@OGMCookie Its actually the Atheists that are racist because their theory of evolution suggest blacks are less evolved since theyre apeish.

I can see how black people evolved from apes since they’re black, but how did white people evolve from apes? Care 2 explain, ASStheists? lol

We only have 5000 years of recorded human history yet Atheists seem to think Earth has been here for billions of years #NotPossible #WakeUp

@zwixxx Dinosaurs are not a proven fact.

@devocevo You claim to have science on your side. Are you aware many scientists are Christian?

Dinosaurs are not a proven fact? Seriously? This guy is a special kind of stupid. Then some dolt named Rachel Bennett jumped in with this charming old nugget of ignorance:

@rickygervais If man evolved from monkeys and apes, why do we still have monkeys and apes?

Because we didn’t evolve from monkeys and apes, we share a common ancestor with both of them (and monkeys and apes are not the same, by the way). If you’d paid even a tiny bit of attention in biology class, you’d know why this is an utterly idiotic question.

To Gervais’ credit, he maintained his civility through all of this:

“@GodsWordIsLaw: I dont know any normal man that stands up for queers.” Man made god in his image: intolerant sexist homophobic & violent

“@DarcieDarling15: please don’t think all christians are like Godswordislaw x” Of course not. There are good and bad people. That is all.

I am not anti christian. I am anti bigot @GodsWordIsLaw I don’t believe in ANY god. I treat all religions equally. And all good people

Christians and all other faiths.. Pls RT http://huff.to/tQ9bd1 And say no to bigots preaching hate in the name of your God. Peace

I’d love to know what real Christians think of @GodsWordIsLaw. I remember it being about love and forgiveness – not hate and persecution. ??

He’s a much nicer guy than I am.

    Ricky Gervais tweats:

I’d love to know what real Christians think of @GodsWordIsLaw.

I find this line of thinking annoying; Mr. Gervais should bone-up the ‘no true Scotsman’ fallacy.

@GodsWordIsLaw is an expected product of Christianity, his type helps define the population where he’s not an outlier. If he were we wouldn’t have one of our two political parties dominated by his type. The fact some Christians might disavow an ass like this misses the more relevant points:

    a) Christians have been insufficiently willing or have have failed to reform their religion in order to minimize such defects,

    b) the Christian approach to thinking, fealty to divinely claimed revelations within the framework of holy dogma, is equivalent to @GodsWordIsLaw approach – even for non-inerrantists. Some Christians are merely able to present their arguments in a more politically correct and less overtly idiotic manner, but the root cause for @GodsWordIsLaw’s conclusions is a defining attribute of Christianity.

This one whacked me upside the head:

“We only have 5000 years of recorded human history yet Atheists seem to think Earth has been here for billions of years #NotPossible #WakeUp ”

Gah. So … if humans didn’t record it, it doesn’t exist?

Hmm. That sort of assumes that Adam and Eve were literate, doesn’t it? Oh, wait, the Bible records the creation of Adam and Eve, so I guess SOMEBODY was there writing things down in plain English.

  • tfkreference

You were conditioned by Lady Satan

Lady? That doesn’t even make sense in the context. (Except perhaps in the case of the graffito: “My mother made me a homosexual,” to which someone replied, “Can she make me one too? How much yarn does she need?”)

  • anandine

tfkreference said, So … if humans didn’t record it, it doesn’t exist?

    Sure. Berkeley proved that.

  • d cwilson

    @tfkreference:

It perfectly encapsulates his homophobia and misogyny in under 140 characters, though.

  • I’m convinced this Keith is a Poe. Nobody’s that stupid, right?

  • “Lady Satan” is a reference to Lady Gaga, actually.

  • Michael Heath

    scaryduck:

I’m convinced this Keith is a Poe. Nobody’s that stupid, right?

That fact we can’t discern whether he is a Poe is a data point validating the Law of Poe while illustrating the nature of Christian fundamentalism.

  • The Lorax

Special kind of stupid indeed. If the mountains of fossils in thousands of museums aren’t enough evidence to convince him that dinosaurs existed, then… I don’t know. There are a lot of solutions to a lot of problems, but no matter how hard I think about that one, the only solution I can envision involves a weighted sack and a cold river.

  • He’s right. Dinosaurs are not a proven fact. Do they appear in the bible? No! Ergo, not a proven fact. Just like so-called “Australia”.

  • raven

I’m convinced this Keith is a Poe. Nobody’s that stupid, right?

    Maybe, maybe not.

IIRC, there has been a fundie “Keith” from the midwest ranting and raving on the internet for decades.

This “Keith” appears to be seriously crazy and routinely says very stupid and viciously ugly things.

Sort of like the Montreal DM guy who was recently apprehended.

  • kermit.

scaryduck: “I’m convinced this Keith is a Poe. Nobody’s that stupid, right?”

Alas, while there are certainly Poes, there are also tens of millions of Americans who really do think like this. I’m related to lots of ’em 🙁

Hmmm. Nice mix of homophobia, racism, atheist bashing and slut-shaming misogyny there. Throw in some islamophobia and antisemitism and this guy would be a veritable smorgasbord of hatred.

  • had3

As a very minor note, the part that got Ed’s “seriously” comment wasn’t about blacks being semi-evolved, but about dinosaurs. Knowing the trolls that roam these pages, someone’s going to contort that to mean that Ed accepted that comment but protected the dinosaur comment. That’s the problem with so much crap being thrown up, when it’s all crap.

  • sqlrob

@rickygervais If man evolved from monkeys and apes, why do we still have monkeys and apes?

Or, as I saw a little while ago, unfortunately don’t remember the source: If man was made from dirt, why is there still dirt?

Throw their own beliefs straight back at ’em.

  • howardpeirce

Many, many years ago (pre-Internet), a very dear friend said to me, in a moment of weakness, “I’m not a racist, but it’s true that black people look more like apes than white people.”

I thought about it for a second, and then I said, “But unlike black people, apes are covered in hair.” And then I did something I never do in public.

    I took off my shirt.

We never spoke of that conversation again.

  • tfkreference

“Lady Satan” is a reference to Lady Gaga, actually.

Words cannot express how happy I am that I did not know that.

Thanks, Ed, for clueing me in.

  • Artor

I’m betting that @GodsWordIsLaw is a Poe. The sentiments and idiocies he spouts are consistent with the worst stereotypes of fundie bigot, but his tweets have far too many correctly-spelled words with real punctuation, and surprisingly little Randome Capitulization!!!

  • Pieter B

If we have Blu-Ray, why are there still CDs and DVDs?

  • diceplaygod

Twitter strikes me as exactly the right place to have a serious, reasoned argument about an important, complicated topic. If you can’t say it in 140 characters, is it really worth saying?

  • Chris from Europe

Apes also have white skin. As he apparently lacks the knowledge about human evolution and skin color, he would have to conclude that whites are more similar to apes. If he does have the knowledge, he still gets evolution wrong in multiple ways. The imagination seems to be that evolution happens in sudden steps and is progressing to higher development. Thus a change in skin color would imply other “improvement”.

  • Pinky

Keith, et al., have drank deeply from the Dominionists’ well of agitprop.

I’m sure the Dominionists plan to convince a groundswell of weak minded – easily indoctrinated individuals like Keith to perform the bigot’s sacrament of Kristallnacht.

Lady Satan? I wonder how my ex got mixed up in this. And what’s the deal with airline food?

    Dingo

Also fond of ‘Kissinger should be bloody well hung!’, which got the reply, ‘He is my dear, he is. – Mrs Kissinger.’

Or in black block capitals: ‘GOD HATES HOMOS’, someone else replief in pink cursive ‘yes but does he like taboulie?’

I wouldn’t be so sure. Check the WBC website sometime (if you can stomach it), or the KKK’s site. Such views as this Keith is expressing actually exist, sad to say.

  • Aquaria

    I’m betting that @GodsWordIsLaw is a Poe.

I bet he’s not. America is stuffed to the rafters with these people, and they’re not all south of the Mason-Dixon line. Consider that this scene didn’t happen in the stereotypically racist South, but in the true-blue liberal Boston of the Kennedys when the schools were supposed to be desegregated:

    http://mikeely.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/bostonbusing.jpg

That took place in 1975, which is long after MLK and Malcolm X had been assassinated, long after the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act had been passed, long after Selma and Montgomery and Birmingham.

The South is racist, openly so, but scratch your average non-Southerner in America, and you’ll find just as hateful and virulent of bigots as you will in Mississippi or East Texas. In his autobiography, Malcolm X even said that he’d rather deal with the in-your-face racism of the South over the same hatred hiding behind the false smiles of the rest of America. Recall that he didn’t grow up in the South or ever live there, but instead spent all of his life in supposedly liberal places like Michigan, Milwaukee, Boston and New York. His entire childhood was apparently one of dealing with racism as common and as hateful as any in the South. Or do you think he was angry just because he was an angry guy, rather than spending a lifetime being treated as abysmally as MLK or any other African-American was in the South?

Does the religulous right masturbate while fantasizing about explosions of hate and violence?

Do you really want to know? Hint: What do you think the hellfire stuff is about?

This nutter isn’t even internally consistent. That’s special.

    Modusoperandi:

-This makes me wonder…I haven’t finished reading the bible (I had to take a break reading that horrible little book during that “she begat him” section early in Genesis)…what countries are actually mentioned in the bible? I rather suspect that there aren’t too many modern countries listed, yet theists follow a book written for a specific group of people in a very specific region of the world. A long time ago.
