How To Pray For Marriage

How To Pray For Marriage February 22, 2012

Right Wing Watch links to the Alliance Defense Fund’s helpful document teaching Christians the best way to pray against marriage equality. Here’s how you maximize the effectiveness of your prayers:

The institution of Marriage is under severe attack in our culture today. Will you join in a nationwide day of unified, focused prayer for Marriage in America?

There are many ways you can be in prayer for marriage on this special day. This is merely a guide to help you, and your church, as you go before the Lord in prayer for marriage.

Praise God for the impact of Marriage:

• Thank Him for how marriage refines our character, creates stable community for the birth and nurture of children, and unites men & women in an enduring whole-life union.

• Thank Him for giving the distinct, irreplaceable gifts a mom and a dad each uniquely bring to children, through marriage.

Pray for the marriages in your community:

• For healing, restoration, and divine protection over the relationships between husbands and wives in your church, neighborhood, and among your friends and family.

• That Christians will hold fast to the Biblical truth about marriage and boldly stand up for children, who are most protected and impacted by marriage.

Pray for the future of Marriage:

• For the nation to uphold the truth that marriage between one man and one woman is the foundation of society and the best environment for raising children.

• For Americans to remember the damage already done to marriage in our society, and how that has hurt children.

Pray for God’s design for sex and sexuality in Marriage:

• Pray for sexual purity; that sex will be reserved for marriage, and celebrated in marriage.

• Pray for those hurting and suffering from going outside of God’s plan for sexuality.

• Pray for sexual fidelity and faithfulness between husbands and wives.

• Pray for children’s innocence to be protected from false sexual indoctrination in schools.

Pray for victory in the lawsuits and legislation that threatens to undermine Marriage:

• Perry v. Brown – a lawsuit to redefine marriage by creating same-sex “marriage.”

• Bishop v. United States – a lawsuit to overturn our nation’s highest law about marriage.

• Brown v. Utah – a lawsuit to legally recognize polygamy.

If they had told people to hop on one leg and spin around three times while throwing salt over their shoulder, that would be just as effective — and far more amusing.

  • Given the manifest effectiveness of prayer, anyone who suggests praying for anything deserves to be beaten with a clue-stick.

  • raven

    That is really lame.

Aren’t they supposed to carry a chicken around a church three times counterclockwise and then kill it on the altar?

And where is the money sacrifice? Jesus or at least his helpers always needs money. I can’t believe they didn’t give an address so the faithful can send money.

Never underestimate the power of distraction…if people take a day to pray that’s one less day they’re doing things that are potentially *effective* to continuing the ridiculous campaign against equal rights for all members of our society.

  • Trebuchet

I’m really surprised it didn’t end in a plea for money.

  • Who Knows?

Stacey, I was just about to say the same thing. I hope they all pray at least 8 hours a day, 7 days a week. They’ll be too busy to do any real damage.

Pray for victory in the lawsuits and legislation that threatens to undermine Marriage:

How exactly do they expect this to come about? Do they want the god to muck about with the Judges’ free will? Are they praying for the god to create well reasoned arguments or peer-reviewed studies ex nihilo? Inquiring minds want to know!

  • How is it that religious people’s marriages are damaged by same sex marriage, but mine remains unaffected? Shouldn’t gay marriage hurt all marriages equally?

  • Larry

    Those who can, do.

    Those who can’t, pray.

“— a lawsuit to legally recognize polygamy.” I was under the impression that this was the biblical marriage – one man and one or more women. It’s in the bible so why the problem.

Given the rate of divorce among fundies, perhaps their idea of what constitutes a holy relationship is not good for people. Certainly what Jesus says about leaving ones family if one is to follow him is not a great idea.

Gay marriage is particularly threatening since both partners are equal. There is none of this idea of one partner being subservient to the other. We definitely cannot allow that.

Pray for children’s innocence to be protected from false sexual indoctrination in schools“.

    Well clearly –

The indoctrination of children into mysteries of sex is the church’s job.

And don’t they do a bang up job of it?

[If it weren’t so true, it’d be mere sarcasm].

Don’t worry. Go to their front page and you’ll see the bright red “Donate Now” button. Because Obamacare tramples on your religious freedom to dictate to your employees what health care choices they can make.

That Christians will hold fast to the Biblical truth about marriage and boldly stand up for children, who are most protected and impacted by marriage.

Which Biblical truth about marriage is that? Maybe this one.

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters–yes, even his own life–he cannot be my disciple.

    Ah family values.

    Praise God…

I like how they start with a bit of brown-nosing. Its well known that eternal, omnipotent, omniscent, benevolent beings prefer the suck-ups. The Ego must be stoked, evidently, before it will respond.

  • God personally told me that the most effective way to pray away the homo-marriage is to hold a non-stop prayer session in your house on Nov. 6 from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. If one person — ONE! — leaves his or her house for any reason during those hours, god will remove his magic spell of protection from the United Statesand and the godless Demoncrats will impose mandatory gay marriage.

davidct: Gay marriage is particularly threatening since both partners are equal. There is none of this idea of one partner being subservient to the other.

True for men marrying men. When a woman marries a woman, both are subservient. To everyone.

    @ eric #13

Actually…according to the King James Bible (the only real word of God) “the Lord your God is a Jealous God”…he says it about a million times in the Old Testament…so clearly…if you don’t want to get smited for presumption you better damn well do some praising. Jesus may be your buddy but making sure Teh Gayz don’t get equal rights is clearly a Big Man job.

Sure, it’s ok to use a prayer cheat sheet or checklist. Yahweh, His Mysterious Spook Brother, and The Boy I’m sure are cool with that. Is it more effective if the pray-er memorizes the checklist first, or reads from it (lips moving while reading of course)? I wish the ADF would spell this out for me. I want to get it right before sending them some cabbage.

  • wscott

I love how these things always seem to imply that God has to be constantly reminded of these facts, and will only do something about it if eneough people badger him.

  • frog

fifthdentist@14: God told me he wants more prayer time in some places. Folks in New York need to pray from 6am to 9pm (must be harder to revoke laws than just prevent them in the first place).

I wonder how hard it would be to start a meme amongst fungedelicals that if they directly lobby or vote against things, they’re showing lack of faith and making baby Jesus cry. You know, the way Christian Scientists aren’t supposed to use modern medicine.

  • uzza

They don’t say how to pray, they only tell you what to pray for. Ed’s advice in the last sentence at least gives you some idea what to do.

  • Ace of Sevens

I get why you are supposed to pray to god when you want a favor, but why do you need to pray for him to look out for his own interests?

  • Reading this made a new take on God come to mind: Computer Poll God. Lists like this make praying to God seem like responding to those online polls FTB readers are always mucking with. You only get the “right” result if enough people push the right button enough times. Computer Poll God apparently can’t do anything on his own volition. Or perhaps Vending Machine God is a better description. If you don’t put enough “coins,” or in this case prayers, he’ll just sit there and do nothing.

  • cafeeineaddicted

Of course this isn’t just a prayer checklist. Its a do-it-yourself indoctrination kit for all the misinformation in there. If after all, if they repeat to themselves every day that e.g. gay marriage hurts children, any facts that contradict it will seem absurd, and will therefore be ignored.
