You can always count on conservative Christians to come up with the most simpleminded explanation for any social problem. It’s usually “you need Jesus,” of course, but it’s also frequently whatever they morally disapprove of at any given moment. Shane Idleman, a pastor from California, has figured out what is causing all these mass shootings — movies and TV shows about zombies and vampires. Oh, and violent video games.
The unavoidable truth is that many are becoming desensitized by movie sensations that are depicting ungodly themes such as witchcraft, the occult, extreme violence, perverted sex, and so on. Violent and perverse video games offer the same destructive pattern. Ironically, this headline appeared in the news in 2013: Navy Yard Shooter “Obsessed with Violent Video Games.”
Our sex-saturated culture will continue to pervert with the ultimate goal of destroying.
Ariel Castro, who was exposed in 2013 for kidnapping three women and holding them for ten years, admitted that a deep addiction to pornography fed his perversion. He eventually committed suicide in prison. His idol promised pleasure but brought death and destruction. For anyone to assume that there isn’t a pattern here is either naive, or grossly out of touch with the culture. The greatest battle we will ever fight is within. Even secular psychologists recognize that our mind is where the battle is either won or lost: “As a man thinks in his heart so is he” (Proverbs 3:27).
Uh, that verse contradicts the sentence before it. We don’t think with our hearts, we think with our brains. And if this is the real cause of school shootings, why doesn’t this happen in other countries as often as it does here? People in Western Europe play violent video games and watch scary movies and TV shows about zombies, witches and vampires too. Why don’t they have mass shootings constantly? Indeed, why is it that much of the mass violence in Europe is carried out by Muslims, who no doubt agree with Idleman about how immoral such things are.
Idleman may not be naive or “out of touch with the culture,” he’s just not capable of thinking logically.
