{"id":513,"date":"2017-12-22T21:56:17","date_gmt":"2017-12-22T21:56:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/divergence.blog\/?p=513"},"modified":"2017-12-22T21:56:17","modified_gmt":"2017-12-22T21:56:17","slug":"christmas-is-the-deconstruction-of-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/divergence\/2017\/12\/22\/christmas-is-the-deconstruction-of-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Christmas is the Deconstruction of the World"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>There are dominant myths and stories that provide the boundaries in which we perceive the world.\u00a0 As much as we might we think we are mavericks with our own personal, individual perceptions (Which, again, is simply a story we believe about our believing), we all are strongly influenced, educated, and discipled into perceiving things a certain way.\u00a0 We are catechized in the most innocuous and simple of ways, for instance, noticing the faint reactions of others we admire to what someone says or does, media and advertising, to the overt educational industrial\/complex, all subsumed within a market\/commodity\/exchange matrix of extremely powerful persuasion.<\/p>\n<p>And so it was in the \u201cfullness of time\u201d too when God became a person.\u00a0 Jesus was born into a world where there were dominant myths and stories\u2014narratives that provided the framework and boundaries in which one could navigate.\u00a0 The dominant story in his part of the world was the story told by Rome.\u00a0 They controlled the economic, educational, civic, political, legal, scientific (as it were), and cultural intersections\u2014the very milieu, ethos, water in which that world swam.\u00a0 How? By military might but also through a narrative that legitimized the use of that military.\u00a0 Roman emperors were gods who maintained the <em>Pax Romana<\/em>-the peace of Rome. This was the \u201cpeace\u201d the world gives.<\/p>\n<p>Christ\u2019s coming, <em>Christmas<\/em> if you will, was the deconstruction of the Roman Empire\u2019s narrative and its \u201cpeace.\u201d\u00a0 Moreover, it was\/is the deconstruction of the world.\u00a0 That deconstruction is revealed in Mary\u2019s Magnificat:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMy soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>From now on all generations will call me blessed,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>for the Mighty One has done great things for me\u2014holy is his name.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.\u201d<\/em>\u2013 Luke 1:46-55<\/p>\n<p>These are the words feared (If they have ears to hear) by every empire, every dictator, every person or entity who operates by the world\u2019s \u201cpeace\u201d or power.\u00a0 The principalities and powers shuddered at these words.\u00a0 Here we are told that the proud are scattered, rulers are brought down, the humble are lifted, the hungry are filled, and the rich sent away empty.\u00a0 Notice, too, they are the words of\u2026a woman.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the great subversion and inversion.\u00a0 Here the world is moved off its axis and spun in a new way.\u00a0 Christmas, the birth of Christ, isn\u2019t a fork in the road of history; it is a lifting of the road off the ground that is then moved under it.\u00a0 The ground and road then disappear as the facade they were\u2014Christ is all in all.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a new path or road; it is a revealing of a new world\u2014one there all along, only hidden by other myths and our propensity to believe them.<\/p>\n<p>There is no \u201cwar\u201d on Christmas (Sorry, FoxNews).\u00a0 How silly.\u00a0 Rather, Christmas was (Is!) the declaration of war upon the principalities and powers who presumed too much, who lifted up empires, the rich, the powerful\u2014to be pseudo, counter, kingdoms of God.\u00a0 Not only was it a deconstruction of the Roman myth, it was a deconstruction of every empire and counter-myth, including the American one (Sorry FoxNews, sorry Trump).<\/p>\n<p>This war, this deconstruction, is a peaceful one though.\u00a0 It is however, no less de-con-structive or powerful.\u00a0 It comes with good tidings, good news, great joy and peace.\u00a0 A peace the world cannot give.\u00a0 It tells a different story\u2014it constructs a world that cannot be deconstructed or moved.<\/p>\n<p>My prayer for all of us this Christmas, is that we might believe this story and inhabit it\u2014that we might rest in it and enjoy the one it speaks of forever.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Merry Christmas to all and a poem for this wintry season<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whose woods these are I think I know.<\/p>\n<p>His house is in the village though; he will not see me stopping here<\/p>\n<p>To watch his woods fill up with snow.<\/p>\n<p>My little horse must think it queer, to stop without a farmhouse near<\/p>\n<p>Between the woods and frozen lake, the darkest evening of the year.<\/p>\n<p>He gives his harness bells a shake, to ask if there is some mistake.<\/p>\n<p>The only other sound\u2019s the sweep, of easy wind and downy flake.<\/p>\n<p>The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep,<\/p>\n<p>And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.<\/p>\n<p>-Robert Frost<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are dominant myths and stories that provide the boundaries in which we perceive the world.\u00a0 As much as we might we think we are mavericks with our own personal, individual perceptions (Which, again, is simply a story we believe about our believing), we all are strongly influenced, educated, and discipled into perceiving things a [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3524,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[56,95,347,359,401],"class_list":["post-513","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-christmas","tag-deconstruction","tag-politics","tag-principalities-and-powers","tag-rome"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
