It is a tradition in White House that a departing staff members get to have photographs taken of their family with the President. So, Carlton Philadelphia, a Marine and member of the National Security Council, brought his family to get photographed with President Obama. Carlton, Roseane, and sons, Jacob and Isaac came in and the kids wanted to ask a question each.<\/p>\n

Jacob\u2019s question resulted in a picture which will remain one of the most memorable in Obama\u2019s time in White House. This is the conversation<\/a> Jacob had with Obama:<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to know if my hair is just like yours,\u201d he told Mr. Obama, so quietly that the president asked him to speak again.<\/p>\n

Jacob did, and Mr. Obama replied, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you touch it and see for yourself?\u201d He lowered his head, level with Jacob, who hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cTouch it, dude!\u201d Mr. Obama said.<\/p>\n

As Jacob patted the presidential crown, Mr. Souza snapped.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, what do you think?\u201d Mr. Obama asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, it does feel the same,\u201d Jacob said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Thankfully the White House photographer Pete Souza was around to take this memorable picture, although it has many flaws \u2013 parents are cut off, the elder brother is blurred out, and the kid\u2019s hand is in front of his face.<\/p>\n

Basically, what the 5 year old Jacob was curious about was if a Black President was like him or not? And even further, if he had a shot at being where Obama is today. At his level, the answer was quite positive.<\/p>\n

David Axelrod, Mr. Obama\u2019s longtime adviser, has a copy framed in his Chicago office. He said of Jacob, \u201cReally, what he was saying is, \u2018Gee, you\u2019re just like me.\u2019 And it doesn\u2019t take a big leap to think that child could be thinking, \u2018Maybe I could be here someday.\u2019 This can be such a cynical business, and then there are moments like that that just remind you that it\u2019s worth it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When asked now \u2013 8 years old \u2013 as to what he wanted to become when he grew up. He says he wants to be the President.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
