Genetically modified food is a big issue these days. \u00a0For health it is a serious thing but its an even bigger thing for national food security. \u00a0As Genetic Modified seeds make their way into the food cycle of a country, then indigenous seeds lose out. \u00a0The country\u2019s crop and food production becomes hostage to the whims and fancies of the seed companies.<\/p>\n

To take the control and the ownership of the seeds away from the farmer means the control goes outside of Nation\u2019s hands. \u00a0In times of a calamity or emergency, it can be a big national security issue.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, thankfully, \u00a0a\u00a0gazette notification was issued by the ministry of consumer affairs, food and public distribution to label the words \u201cGM\u201d on a label\u00a0prominently\u00a0displayed. \u00a0If the food includes traces of GM foosd, it is important to say that it is GM. \u00a0Unfortunately, the notification is vague and incomplete.<\/p>\n

The gazette notification also lacks clarity on the threshold for the presence of GM ingredients. It mentions no mechanisms on how this will this be monitored, and whether this is applicable to both primary and processed foods.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Earlier the Bt Bringal was being pushed through and was approved by\u00a0\u00a0Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) but later barred by \u00a0Environment Minister\u00a0Jairam Ramesh.<\/p>\n

The GM food issue is a big thing in the US and 70% of the package food \u00a0products containing GM traces \u00a0 Europe on the other hand, wants nose of he traces \u00a0of GM food. \u00a0In Europe % hace\"\"<\/p>\n
