When all your religious symbols are related to a certain place on earth then you have a bit of an issue when you have to leave the earth and travel to space. \u00a0There is a reason why no Muslim country has a Space Program or has sent astronauts. \u00a0The practicing and \u201cgood\u201d Muslim will have to forgo all that makes him a good Muslim. Look at the questions facing a practicing Muslim in a space station:<\/p>\n

The space station travels at\u00a027,000km\/h, making 16 orbits a day \u2013 which means 16 sunsets and sunrises (from earth\u2019s standpoint). \u00a0For a 5 times worship from sunrise to sunset, this comes out to 80 Namazes in 24 hours. \u00a0That is a bit taxing for an astronaut.<\/li>\n
Let us assume he does prayers only 5 times in 24 hours \u2013 to heck with the Earth rounds \u2013 where, pray should he face? \u00a0On Earth, he faced Mecca \u2013 wherever it was. \u00a0But now? \u00a0He might have to stand on his head to face the place.<\/li>\n
And suppose he does find a way to \u201cface the Mecca\u201d, how does he hold his position in Zero Gravity? \u00a0Interesting conundrum huh?!<\/li>\n
On top of all this the guy will have to wash himself 5 times a day, and no one is going to give him so much water \u2013 which is a rare commodity in space.<\/li>\n
Plus he will have to carry his private tiffin along with him to ensure he is getting Halal food. \u00a0After all, he doesn\u2019t want to go all the way only to eat Haram. \u00a0Does he?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Well, why these questions? \u00a0Because Malaysia is going to send a Muslim to space along with the Russians. \u00a0Out of 10,000 applicants,\u00a0Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor and Faiz Khaleed \u2013 have been the finalists and one of them would go.<\/p>\n
The guy who goes will have another rough issue to deal with. \u00a0He (it won\u2019t be a she thank God, or the Burkha would have clouded the whole place in zero gravity) will be going during Ramadan! \u00a0And\u2026 he should be fasting! \u00a0Damn! \u00a0But wait, one has to fast from sunrise to sunset\u2026 and in the space station they will have it 16 times. \u00a0So, he gets to eat every One and half hours? \u00a0Huh?<\/p>\n
Mustafa Abdul Rahman, the head of the nation\u2019s Department of Islamic Development is the man behind finalizing the religious stuff, and he and his team have been at it for over an year now. \u00a0You would think that with just one book and story of one man\u2019s lifetime, by now they would have all figured out in complete detail within one year. \u00a0Specially for a religion, that its believers say \u2013 had \u201call the answers to a human\u2019s pursuits\u201d. \u00a0Right?<\/p>\n
Well, the solutions from the Islamic scholars<\/a> after a year of rigorous research kind of match the specificity of answers by a First Grader.<\/p>\n
The winner will be told that he may choose to fast in space (one and a half hour? No answer!)<\/em><\/strong> or make up for it when he returns. If an astronaut doubts that the food provided is halal, he *\u201c\u2018should consume it only to the extent of restraining hunger\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n*
On prayers to Mecca, however, the guidebook sidesteps. These should be performed, it says, *\u201caccording to the capability of the astronaut\u201d<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n*
