D. B. Cooper<\/strong>\u00a0is a media\u00a0epithet<\/a>\u00a0popularly used to refer to an unidentified man who\u00a0hijacked<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0Boeing 727<\/a>\u00a0aircraft in the airspace between\u00a0Portland, Oregon<\/a>, and\u00a0Seattle, Washington<\/a>, on November 24, 1971. He extorted\u00a0$<\/a>200,000[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0in ransom and parachuted to an uncertain fate. Despite an extensive manhunt and an ongoing\u00a0FBI<\/a>\u00a0investigation, the perpetrator has never been located or positively identified. The case remains the only unsolved air piracy in American aviation history.[2]<\/a><\/sup>[3]<\/a><\/sup>[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The suspect purchased his airline ticket under the alias\u00a0Dan Cooper<\/strong>; but, because of a news media miscommunication, he became known in popular lore as \u201cD. B. Cooper.\u201d Hundreds of leads have been pursued in the ensuing years, but no conclusive evidence has ever surfaced regarding Cooper\u2019s true identity or whereabouts, and the bulk of the ransom money has never been recovered. Numerous theories of widely varying plausibility have been proposed by experts, reporters, and amateur enthusiasts.[2]<\/a><\/sup>[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

While FBI investigators have insisted from the beginning that Cooper probably did not survive his risky jump,[6]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0the agency maintains an active case file\u2014which has grown to more than 60 volumes[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u2014and continues to solicit creative ideas and new leads from the public. \u201cMaybe a\u00a0hydrologist<\/a>\u00a0can use the latest technology to trace the $5,800 in ransom money found in 1980 to where Cooper landed upstream,\u201d suggested Special Agent Larry Carr, leader of the investigation team since 2006. \u201cOr maybe someone just remembers that odd uncle.\u201d[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
