Ravi Shankar is no more.<\/p>\n

He passed away at the age of 92. \u00a0Last Thursday he underwent heart valve replacement surgery at \u00a0Scripps Memorial Hospital\u00a0in\u00a0La Jolla, San Diego, California<\/a>. \u00a0His body couldn\u2019t withstand the strain of the surgery and gave way at the ripe age of 92.<\/p>\n

The maestro leaves behind a large body of work \u2013 in classical music, in popular music, Western musical world, Bollywood music<\/a> direction, and fusion music. \u00a0His encounter with George Harrison<\/a> may have been the most fortunate for Indian classical music<\/a>\u2018s fortune\u2019s in the West. \u00a0That afforded him a doorway to the Western music<\/a> scene.<\/p>\n

Ravi Shankar was born in Varanasi to a Bengali family and his real name was\u00a0Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury. \u00a0He had initially joined the dance troupe of his brother, Uday Shankar and learned dance as well as other instruments, until he settled down on Sitar and learnt from\u00a0Allauddin Khan<\/a>\u00a0in Maihar<\/a>.<\/p>\n
