A Facebook friend had the following interesting status on her wall:<\/p>\n

I\u2019m always curious when I hear people mention, \u2018Facebook friends\u2019, Facebook behaviour\u2019, \u2018Facebook mannerisms\u2019..are we so different here than what many think of as \u2018real life\u2019 ? unless of course you wear different masks for different phases and areas of life..<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In study after study, researchers and media seems to suggest that somehow the Social Networking sites are creating issues in lives of people that weren\u2019t hitherto there.\u00a0 Is that really true?<\/p>\n

Even when divorces happen because<\/em> of Facebook \u2013 infidelity or other reasons \u2013 those cases occur because the seed for that is there.\u00a0 The avenues to express and meet may be there now, which weren\u2019t there earlier.\u00a0 But that is the exact same challenge that happened when someone moved from a village to a city.\u00a0 Or when you move from a two person family to a joint family.<\/p>\n

The number of people you interact with increases of the scale and amplifies the quirks of personalities of all involved to a higher pitch.\u00a0 Some flaw in personality, which was being suppressed or not even acknowledged comes out with the anonymity of an online network.\u00a0 But this anonymity advantage was also present in a big city, where a person could do a lot of things knowing reasonably well that the next guy doesn\u2019t care and doesn\u2019t know you.<\/p>\n

Facebook also provides the same advantage but at a much higher level.\u00a0 It is city living on steroids and many times amplified.<\/p>\n

So when this friend says using \u201cFacebook\u201d as a prefix for normal things like behavior, friends etc doesn\u2019t make them any different; I agree.\u00a0 Qualitatively these things aren\u2019t any different, even though quantitatively they may be.\u00a0 After all, even when someone does something on FB \u2013 even with a \u201cdifferent mask\u201d, it is s\/he who is doing it \u2013 whatever the mask, not the Facebook.\u00a0 So the behavior is of a person itself \u2013 whether on or off the Facebook.\u00a0 It is simply facilitated by (1) Greater anonymity (2) Number of possible relationships\/contacts \u2013 which act as accentuating factors.<\/p>\n

So is Facebook made you live your life differently?<\/p>\n
