Interesting.\u00a0 Didn\u2019t know that an apex news organization would have a deliberate slant on a controversial issue.\u00a0 AP wants to play the role of an activist in this whole drama that has gripped only US really.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know of any other country, where this issue gives a headache to so many at the political level.\u00a0 Wonder how you can trust the impartiality of the news coming from their channels anymore?<\/p>\n

There appears to be open dissension at the Associated Press (AP) over the media entity\u2019s new policy, announced yesterday, not to necessarily refer to legally-wed gay couples in the same way they refer to legally-wed straight ones. A lead AP reporter covering LGBT issues, David Crary, has said that he won\u2019t follow the new policy<\/a>.

Shortly after an internal AP memo<\/a>\u00a0banning the use of the words \u201chusband\u201d and \u201cwife\u201d for legally-wed<\/strong> gay couples was leaked, AP changed its story \u2013 they think they fixed the problem. \u00a0They most certainly did not.\u00a0\u00a0AP even tweeted me<\/a> that it\u2019s fixed:<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s not fixed at all.<\/p>\n

Now AP has a ban on the terms husband and wife for gay couples unless the couples use the term about themselves. <\/em>\u00a0Is that AP\u2019s standard for straight couples too? \u00a0Only call straight people husband and wife if the couple calls themselves husband and wife? \u00a0I doubt it.<\/p>\n

From AP\u2019s memo:<\/p>\n

SAME-SEX COUPLES: We were asked how to report about same-sex couples who call themselves \u201chusband\u201d and \u201cwife.\u201d Our view is that such terms may be used in AP content if those involved have regularly used those terms (\u201cSmith is survived by his husband, John Jones\u201d) or in quotes attributed to them. Generally AP uses couples or partners to describe people in civil unions or same-sex marriages.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
