Remember those math problems, where when we couldn\u2019t get the answer, we would go for a walk and come back\u2026 and immediately \u201cget it\u201d?! \u00a0Well, it has scientific basis.<\/p>\n

A recent study published in\u00a0Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0has shown\u00a0that the brain regions responsible for decision-making continue to be active even when the conscious brain is distracted with a different task. \u00a0The research was done<\/a> by a team at Carnegie Mellon.<\/p>\n

For the study, Creswell, recent Carnegie Mellon graduate James K. Bursley<\/strong> and Northeastern University\u2019s Ajay B. Satpute<\/strong> presented 27 healthy adults with information about cars and other items while undergoing neuroimaging. Then, before being asked to make decisions about the items, the participants had to complete a difficult distractor task\u2014memorizing sequences of numbers\u2014to prevent them from consciously thinking about the decision information.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The study threw up three main findings:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. brief period of distraction\u2014in this case two minutes\u2014produced higher quality decisions about the cars and other items<\/li>\n
  2. during the distractor task, both the visual and prefrontal cortices continued to be active\u2014or reactivated\u2014even though the brain was consciously focused on number memorization<\/li>\n
  3. the amount of reactivation within the visual and prefrontal cortices during the distractor task predicted the degree to which participants made better decisions, such as picking the best car in the set.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Basically, it is important to rest the brain before going ahead with a problem which you have engaged in over a long period of time.<\/p>\n
