Ms Laalaa is one of 17 men and women from Sydney\u2019s Muslim community who qualified to become lifesavers as part of a Call The Same Wave program.<\/p>\n

Introduced after the Cronulla riots, it promotes ethnic harmony and encourages Australians from diverse cultural backgrounds to become lifesavers.<\/p>\n

Lee Howell, of Surf Life Saving Australia, said the burquini, made from polyester and teflon, had created worldwide interest.<\/p>\n

Middle Eastern and European countries were keen to introduce the costume in their surf-rescue operations, he said.<\/p>\n

For Ms Laalaa, it has given her the freedom she dreamed about.<\/p>\n

Growing up, she was never allowed to swim at the beach.<\/p>\n

\"It wasn\u2019t safe to swim in cotton pants and a top. I could just go in up to my knees, but I used to get so jealous of everyone else,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
