Though its sister-craft, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Voyager_2\" title=\"Voyager 2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Voyager 2<\/a><\/em>, was launched 1 month earlier, <em>Voyager 2<\/em> will never pass <em>Voyager 1.<\/em> Neither will the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Horizons\" title=\"New Horizons\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">New Horizons<\/a><\/em> mission to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pluto\" title=\"Pluto\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pluto<\/a>, despite being launched from Earth at a faster speed than both <em>Voyager<\/em> craft. During its lifetime <em>Voyager 1<\/em> has benefited from a number of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gravitational_slingshot\" title=\"Gravitational slingshot\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">gravity assisted<\/a> speed boosts.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Voyager_1#_note-0\" title=\"\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>As of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/July_6\" title=\"July 6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">July 6<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2007\" title=\"2007\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">2007<\/a>, <em>Voyager 1<\/em> is over 15.44 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terameter\" title=\"Terameter\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">terameters<\/a> (15.44\u00d710<sup>12<\/sup> meters, or 15.44\u00d710<sup>9<\/sup> km, 103.2 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Astronomical_unit\" title=\"Astronomical unit\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">AU<\/a>, or 9.6 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1000000000_%28number%29\" title=\"1000000000 (number)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">billion<\/a> miles) from the Sun, and has thus entered the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heliosheath\" title=\"Heliosheath\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">heliosheath<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Termination_shock\" title=\"Termination shock\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">termination shock<\/a> region between the solar system and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interstellar_medium\" title=\"Interstellar medium\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">interstellar space<\/a>, a vast area where the Sun\u2019s influence gives way to the other bodies in the galaxy. If <em>Voyager 1<\/em> is still functioning when it finally passes the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heliopause\" title=\"Heliopause\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">heliopause<\/a>, scientists will get their first direct measurements of the conditions in the interstellar medium.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Currently, light take 13.8 hours to reach Earth.
