Well that is an interesting scenario.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/1925961a-67e4-11dc-8906-0000779fd2ac.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Here<\/a> is a guy who actually happened to articulate such a wish and then lived to regret it!<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cI used to say to my father,\u201d he says, \u201c\u2009\u2018If my class at Yale ran this country, we would have no problems.\u2019 And the irony of my life is that they did.\u201d He pauses before invoking a 20th-century American foreign-policy who\u2019s who: \u201cThere was Cy Vance, Bill Scranton, Ted Beale, both Bundys, Bill and McGeorge \u2013 they all got behind that war in Vietnam and they pushed it as far as they could. And we lost a quarter of a million men. They were all idealistic, good, virtuous,\u201d says Auchincloss, \u201cthe finest men you could find. It was the most disillusioning thing that happened in my life.\u201d<!--break--><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Auchincloss has struggled to understand just how their shared patrician background could have produced this disconnect. And the answer would appear to be that wars are lost, if not always made, on the playing fields of New England. \u201cBill Bundy and I shared a study at Groton, and one day he came in from a football game, and I said: \u2018Who won?\u2019 and he said: \u2018We lost,\u2019 and then he burst into tears. You cannot lose. Groton cannot lose. That\u2019s what they believed in, no matter what,\u201d explains Auchincloss. \u201cThey all would have all been willing to die, if they hadn\u2019t already been in high positions. They believed America cannot lose.
