<\/iframe><\/p>\nMany of the Bible stories and verses we think we know, we don\u2019t! When We Understand the Text is an internet-based video ministry committed to righting some of the wrong understanding of scripture, all while advancing the gospel of Jesus Christ. Here\u2019s our latest video!<\/p>\nIn John 10:10, Jesus said,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\u201cThe thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.\u00a0 I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\nOften, when this verse gets quoted, the thief is described as the devil.\u00a0 But, that\u2019s not exactly the context.\u00a0 To the Jews and Pharisees, Jesus said,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in another way, that man is a thief and a robber.\u00a0 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.\u00a0 To him the gatekeeper opens.\u00a0 The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.<\/b><\/p>\nWhen he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.\u00a0 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him for they do not know the voice of strangers.\u201d\u00a0 This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they\u2019d not understand what He was saying to them.<\/b><\/p>\n\u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.\u00a0 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.\u00a0 I am the door.\u00a0 If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.\u00a0 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.\u00a0 I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.\u201d (John 10:1-10)<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\nIn context, we see that the thieves and robbers Jesus describes are false teachers who con with their lies and destroy by twisting the life-saving Gospel.\u00a0 Jesus is referencing Ezekiel\u2019s warning:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\u201cAh, shepherds of Israel feeding yourselves!\u00a0 Should not the shepherds feed the sheep?\u00a0 The weak you have not strengthened, the sick you have not healed, the injured you have not bound up, the strayed you have not brought back, the lost you have not sought, and with force and harshness you have ruled them.\u00a0 So they were scattered, because there was not shepherd, and they became food for all the wild beasts.\u201d (Ezekiel 34:2, 4-5)<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\nIsrael\u2019s leaders were using their powerful position to feed themselves rather than God\u2019s people.\u00a0 Today, there are false ministers who twist God\u2019s word for selfish gain.\u00a0 The true followers of Jesus won\u2019t listen to such strangers.\u00a0 They will follow the Good Shepherd.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\u201cI am the good shepherd.\u00a0 The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.\u201d\u00a0 (John 10:11)<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\nJesus \u2013 the Good Shepherd \u2013 gives abundant life, meaningful and eternal life.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Many of the Bible stories and verses we think we know, we don\u2019t!
