Signs sprouted like weeds almost as soon as the candidates announced their intentions for the presidential election. With placards waving incessantly at passersby, it was like a silent screaming match across driveways and flower beds.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>But in 2024?\u00a0 Not so much. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sure, there is the neighbor\u2019s 2020 Trump sign that has remained a permanent fixture in their yard.\u00a0 And another neighbor\u2019s homemade Trump sign has become weathered and worn over the past four years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12168\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12168\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12168\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/764\/2024\/10\/Quiet-Quitting-Trump-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Are people quiet quitting Trump?\" width=\"768\" height=\"497\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12168\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Are people quiet quitting Trump? Schade.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>But we are nearly a month from election day, and most of the yards in my neighborhood are empty of political signs.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I considered putting a Harris-Walz sign in our front yard.\u00a0 But after the shooting incident on July 13 at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, we decided against it. Although Lexington is a blue-dot city, there are still plenty of gun-brandishing MAGA residents here.\u00a0 Best not to trigger them.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Apparently, there are other Harris supporters who are doing the same.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One neighbor told me that she is voting for Harris but not putting up a sign because of fear of retaliation from her employer.<\/p>\n<p>Another person confided to me her stepmother is voting for Kamala Harris but not telling her Trump-loving father. It\u2019s prudent to keep the peace at home and make her voice heard at the ballot box.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, I\u2019m suspecting that there may be more support for the Harris-Walz ticket than even the polls are showing.<\/p>\n<p>This is not to say there are no Trump signs, because of course there are. \u00a0But there are considerably less than I saw in the previous two elections.<\/p>\n<p>This has me wondering.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Are people quiet quitting Trump?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It seems I\u2019m not the only person observing the diminished number of Trump signs in bright-red areas of the country. I\u2019ve been unofficially tracking posts about this on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>One person wrote: \u201cI live in a red county that has had signs for the convicted felon rapist everywhere since 2016 \u2013 but could count on one hand what is up for him this election. A few for Harris here and there. People are just quietly changing their minds and not advertising this to their neighbors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another one said: \u201cI\u2019m in Texas. I don\u2019t see Harris signs. But I\u2019ve been surprised how few of his signs I\u2019ve seen. So, maybe progress?\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Of course, we won\u2019t know until after November 5<sup>th<\/sup> what the lack of signs means.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It may be that sign-less voters are not quiet quitting Trump, but are simply not being public about their support for him.<\/p>\n<p>But even in the rural areas around Lexington, I\u2019m surprised to see so few Trump signs, and even some signs for Harris-Walz.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12174\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12174\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12174 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/764\/2024\/10\/Kentuckians-For-Harris-Walz-2024-300x207.jpg\" alt=\"Kentuckians for Harris Walz\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12174\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kentuckians for Harris Walz sign<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Could it be that the \u201csilent majority\u201d this time is a quietly building blue wave that will crest in the 2024 election?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are other indications that people are quiet quitting Trump.<\/p>\n<p>According to data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ash.harvard.edu\/articles\/the-real-numbers-tracking-crowd-sizes-at-presidential-rallies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\" decorated-link\">Crowd Counting Consortium<\/a>, Trump\u2019s average crowd sizes (5,600) are smaller than Harris\u2019s (13,400).\u00a0 Many who attend his rallies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-people-leaving-rally-reason-b2624212.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">leave early<\/a>. And I\u2019m seeing scores of videos from Republicans who say they are voting for Kamala Harris because of their disgust with Trump\u2019s lies and hateful rhetoric, as well as their fears about Project 2025.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Project 2025 is especially unpopular, even with a plurality of Republicans.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/poll-project-2025-broadly-known-severely-unpopular-voters-rcna172660\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">NBC News poll<\/a> indicates that \u201cabout 57% of registered voters report feeling negatively about\u00a0Project 2025.\u201d That includes 33% of Republicans.<\/p>\n<h3>What is Project 2025?<\/h3>\n<p>Project 2025 is the Christian nationalist blueprint for dismantling the democratic infrastructures of government and replacing them with autocratic mandates supported by Trump loyalists.<\/p>\n<p>Spearheaded by the extremist right-wing think tank, the Heritage Foundation, Project 2025 is a \u201cwell-funded and highly coordinated effort to institute a systemic, ruthless plan to undermine the quality of life of millions of Americans, remove critical protections and dismantle programs for communities across the nation, and do the work of special interests and ideological extremists as opposed to doing work for the American people,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/democracyforward.org\/updates\/democracy-forward-releases-report-detailing-devastating-impacts-of-the-far-right-project-2025s-day-one-policies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Democracy Forward<\/a>\u2019s analysis of the 900-page document.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Adding to the reasons for people quiet quitting Trump is his running mate, JD Vance.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Vance has shape-shifted his entire career, morphing from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/08\/16\/g-s1-17184\/jd-vance-hillbilly-elegy-barbara-kingsolver-appalachia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Appalachian hillbilly<\/a>, to Yale Law School graduate, to darling of the billionaire tech bros who funded his Senate campaign. Now they\u2019ve inserted him into the position that would be a heartbeat away from the presidency.<\/p>\n<p>According to Vance\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/29\/politics\/jd-vance-yale-friend-political-transformation-trump\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">former Yale Law School classmate<\/a>, \u201cthe Republican vice presidential nominee is a \u2018chameleon\u2019 who has changed his views on \u2018literally every imaginable issue.\u2019\u201d This includes shifting from thinking that Trump was \u201cAmerica\u2019s H!tler\u201d to accepting the nomination to be his running mate.<\/p>\n<p>Vance\u2019s recent debate performance clearly demonstrated his ability to lie with the smoothness of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0134119\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">The Talented Mr. Ripley<\/a>. \u00a0There was none of Trump\u2019s bluster and blather. No, Vance effortlessly spins out lies with the calm smile of a practiced psychopath.\u00a0 It was chilling to watch.<\/p>\n<p>Because behind Vance\u2019s genial persona lurks a manipulative, amoral, and dangerous man who has no qualms in telling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/ecopreacher\/2024\/09\/haitian-immigrants-eating-dogs-trumps-hidden-message\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\" decorated-link\">lies that cause incredible harm to people, including Haitian immigrants<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>JD Vance\u2019s real agenda<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Even more alarming is Vance\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow\/watch\/watch-rachel-maddow-lays-out-why-you-should-care-about-jd-vance-s-real-agenda-220521029601\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">statement<\/a> that we need to \u201ctotally replace, rip out like a tumor, the American leadership class, and reinstall some sense of American political religion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yes, he\u2019s talking about a theocracy.<\/p>\n<p>Such views come from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2024\/07\/18\/jd-vance-world-view-sources-00168984\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">radical thinkers<\/a> such as billionaire <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6092844\/peter-thiel-power-biography-the-contrarian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Peter Thiel<\/a> (who funded Vance\u2019s rise in politics) and New Right techno-authoritarian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/23373795\/curtis-yarvin-neoreaction-redpill-moldbug\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Curtis Yarvin<\/a>, who argues that Americans need to \u201cget over their dictator-phobia.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow\/watch\/watch-rachel-maddow-lays-out-why-you-should-care-about-jd-vance-s-real-agenda-220521029601\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Rachel Maddow\u2019s recent segment on JD Vance\u2019s real agenda<\/a> for America is a must-watch wake-up call about Vance\u2019s real agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, Project 2025 would be merely the warm-up act for the dystopian future that JD Vance and his techno-autocrats envision for America.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>This may sound horrific to you.\u00a0 But for 40% of Americans, an authoritarian future is appealing.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Public Religion Research Institute recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prri.org\/press-release\/survey-four-in-ten-americans-are-susceptible-to-authoritarianism-but-most-still-reject-political-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">surveyed 5,000 Americans and found that four in ten \u201care susceptible to authoritarian appeals<\/a>, and that number rises to two-thirds of Republicans and white evangelical Protestants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to PRRI president and founder, Robert Jones, \u201cNotably, while the vast majority of Americans reject the use of political violence, those who support authoritarianism are nearly twice as likely as the general public to support it. These findings should serve as an important warning as we enter an election season that is incredibly consequential for the health of American democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What fuels this desire for a strong leader who is willing to break rules and use violence against opponents?<\/p>\n<h2>In a word, fear.<\/h2>\n<p>As PRRI reports, \u201csupport for authoritarian views are strongest among Republicans (particularly those who hold favorable views of former President Donald Trump), supporters of Christian nationalism, white evangelical Protestants, and weekly churchgoers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the heart of the religious fervor driving right-wing authoritarianism among churchgoers are Christian apocalyptic and dominionist views. These views stoke fear and hatred of immigrants, women, those with a college education (\u201cthe elite\u201d), people of color, and those who do not conform to their religious mandates for society.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Granted, fear provides a great deal of energy for despotic movements. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As I wrote in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/ecopreacher\/2024\/09\/haitian-immigrants-eating-dogs-trumps-hidden-message\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\" decorated-link\">article<\/a> about Trump\u2019s \u201ceating cats and dogs\u201d hoax, fear is a primary recruiting technique for hate groups.<\/p>\n<p>But fear is not the only energy in play this is election season.\u00a0 In fact, I don\u2019t think it\u2019s even the most powerful energy right now.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>I believe the combined power of joy, unity, and compassion is a stronger energy than fear.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12192\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12192\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12192\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/764\/2024\/10\/joyful-warriors.harriswalz2024-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Joyful warriors - Kamala Harris and Tim Walz\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12192\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joyful warriors \u2013 Kamala Harris and Tim Walz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From the beginning of her campaign, Kamala Harris has been a powerful, joyful force countering Trump and Vance\u2019s grievance-stoking fear. And the unity of coalition building around her has been impressive.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bwfk.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Black Women for Kamala<\/a> led the way with an <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/kamala-harris-president-black-women-support-bdd0ba0a19697c7cd2f183773e97aa6e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">estimated 90,000 people on their Zoom call<\/a> on July 21<sup>st<\/sup>, just days after Joe Biden stepped down and Harris stepped up.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, there have been Zoom calls across a wide spectrum of interest groups. 160,000 on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/more-than-160000-people-join-white-women-kamala-harris-zoom-call-2024-07-26\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">White Women for Kamala<\/a>. 180,000 on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/white-dudes-rally-elect-first-female-president-rcna164208\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">White Dudes for Kamala<\/a>. 70,000 on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/politics\/republicans-for-harris-online-rally-attended-by-over-70000-people\/ar-AA1oM3yv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Republicans for Harris<\/a>. And, yes, there was even an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/billy-grahams-granddaughter-joins-evangelicals-for-harris-call.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Evangelicals for Harris<\/a> with 40,000 on Zoom.<\/p>\n<p>This is the kind of coalition building that is needed to counter Trump\u2019s and Vance\u2019s scourge of fearmongering.<\/p>\n<p>And it may be an indication that people are doing more than quiet quitting Trump.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>They may be \u201cquiet questing.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I believe there may be a movement of people subtly, yet actively, seeking out opportunities to heal from the hatred.\u00a0 People who want to reconnect with their \u2013 and their neighbors\u2019 \u2013 humanity.<\/p>\n<p>I sense that this \u201cquiet questing\u201d may usher in a new era of rebuilding the things that create community \u2013 civility, respect, service, ethics, and compassion.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>It\u2019s a Monsters Inc. moment!<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I keep thinking about the first <em>Monsters Inc<\/em>. movie.\u00a0 In the monster world, scaring children was their source of power. They competed to see who could scare the most children and receive prizes for quickly fulfilling their \u201cscare quota.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12177\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12177\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12177 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/764\/2024\/10\/124b92f8cd4c45e4fd33f1e7e914c6d4-sully-and-boo-boo-from-monsters-inc-300x256.jpg\" alt=\"Monsters Inc., Sully and Boo\" width=\"300\" height=\"256\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12177\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monsters Inc., Sully and Boo, fan art by Sukhwinder Lall, https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/pin\/573153490069681259\/<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But when a toddler accidentally ends up in their world, her laughter is so powerful that it literally blows the circuits. Eventually the monsters learn that joy and love are more potent than fear.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, they must battle and outsmart the autocratic CEO who financially benefits from his fear-based power and would do anything to keep it. But eventually they learn to reconstruct their entire power grid for the purposes of making children laugh with joy instead of scream with fear.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>If you\u2019re quiet quitting Trump, you\u2019re not alone.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>And if you\u2019re quiet questing for a future that fills you with hope, purpose, and a sense of camaraderie with your fellow Americans, there\u2019s a wide blue tent to welcome you.<\/p>\n<h2>But you must do more than hope.\u00a0 You must vote blue up and down the ballot in all races in local, state, and national levels.<\/h2>\n<p>We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to more than quiet quit Trump.\u00a0 We can loudly and boldly show that Americans are better than our worst demons and stronger with our better angels.<\/p>\n<p>When our better angels come together, our better future can become a reality.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Update, 11\/6\/2024.\u00a0 I was wrong.\u00a0 People were not quiet quitting Trump after all. Fear, hatred, misogyny, xenophobia, and Christian nationalism have taken over.
