Read the full biblical passage <a href=\"https:\/\/bible.oremus.org\/?version=NRSV&amp;passage=Genesis%202:18-24&amp;vnum=yes&amp;fnote=no&amp;show_ref=yes&amp;headings=no&amp;semico=yes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Genesis 2:18-24 is one of the readings for the Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost in Year A of Revised Common Lectionary, October 3, 2021.\u00a0 This is the Sunday closest to the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi (Oct. 4) which is often celebrated in churches with a \u201cBlessing of the Animals.\u201d Congregations invite parishioners to bring their pets for special blessings and celebrate the love and joy our animals bring to us. This Sunday also marks the end of the <a href=\"https:\/\/seasonofcreation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Season of Creation<\/a> which began on Sept. 1.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7934\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7934\" style=\"width: 908px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7934\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/764\/2021\/09\/Blessing-Animals-Sunday.jpg.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"908\" height=\"509\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7934\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blessing Animals Sunday. Photo by Terricks Noah on Unsplash https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/jrxMnveNEg4<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Focus on Genesis 2:19<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>So out of the ground the\u00a0Lord\u00a0God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Eco-Exegesis<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>Eco-exegesis is a method of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/ecopreacher\/2023\/02\/10-principles-for-environmental-preaching-eco-sermons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\" decorated-link\">interpreting the biblical text through a green lens<\/a> using the principles of ecological theology.\u00a0 For this passage, we turn to the<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/ecopreacher\/2021\/04\/eco-bible-must-have-jewish-ecological-commentary-genesis-exodus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\" decorated-link\">Eco Bible,<\/a> <em>a Jewish ecological commentary on the Hebrew texts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to the <em>Eco Bible<\/em>, \u201cGod created animals <em>after <\/em>people in the second creation story, with the purpose of Adam naming the animals.\u00a0 Adam was engaged in a relationship of recognition and non-violent interaction.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[i]<\/a> The story implies that Adam studied each animal not as a commodity to be bought, sold, consumed, or used for himself.\u00a0 Rather, he regarded each of God\u2019s creatures as a sacred <em>nefesh chaya<\/em>, \u201csoul of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>As we envision God leading this procession of animals to Adam, we might see this as the first worship service in Eden!<\/h3>\n<p>We can imagine Adam gathered with the rest of his Earth-kin in a chorus of whinnies, chortles, buzzes, chitters, and bellows of praise to their Creator.\u00a0 This was, perhaps, the first Blessing of the Animals Sunday!<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Eco Bible <\/em>goes on to explain that \u201cthe original human was granted dominion because of his ability to respect and learn about the animal kingdom in this manner.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[ii]<\/a>\u00a0 Rabbi David Seidenberg writes that in the midrashim (interpretive writings) about the relationship between humans and animals in Genesis, rabbis consistently asserted that \u201cthe animals come to us as teachers.\u201d In contrast to a hierarchical, utilitarian view of animals, Scripture shows us that \u201cthey are not just presented as vassals or objects to be taken care of.\u00a0 We can learn from them only by humbly standing in relation to them, i.e., by \u2018under-standing,\u2019 in the truest and deepest sense of the word.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[iii]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><em><strong>1 Eco-Idea<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><em>The Eco-Idea is one succinct statement that tells us who God is and\/or what God does in relation to Creation and how we should respond as people of faith. The Eco-Idea for this sermon is:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>God created all living creatures as kin to humans and fellow worshipers within the sanctuary of Earth. As such, humans must reorient their attitudes and economies so that animals are treated with respect and honor instead of as products, servants, and entertainment.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2 Eco-Questions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>Eco-Questions are what we can ask to help a congregation draw out the implications of the Eco-Exegesis and Eco-Idea.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>On this Sunday when many churches celebrate \u201cBlessing of the Animals,\u201d can we take a hard look at the way we overvalue some animals (such as our pets) and commodify, consume, ignore, or sacrifice others? What are ways that we can shift our attitudes toward animals so that we protect their dwindling and endangered habitats, refrain from abusing them, and, if we must eat them, ensure their humane treatment during their brief lives?<\/li>\n<li>In a 2017 survey I conducted about U.S. preachers and topics they address in sermons, \u201cspecies extinction\u201d ranked dead last among subjects clergy talked about in their preaching in the previous year.<a href=\"#_edn4\" name=\"_ednref4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[iv]<\/a> If we envision animals as our fellow worshipers in this Earthly realm, what are ways we can speak for them in our pulpits, congregations, denominations, and interfaith organizations?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>3 Eco-Actions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>Eco-Actions are ways that a congregation might respond to the Eco-Idea and Eco-Questions.\u00a0 One of these possibilities may have salience for your preaching context.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2964 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/764\/2018\/08\/orca-jumping-out-of-water.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\"><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Do an Internet search to find out what species of animals are endangered in your area. Invite a local naturalist to talk with your congregation about what your church can do to help protect them. Take up a special collection and make a donation to a local organization committed to preserving this species.<\/li>\n<li>In its article, \u201cSecrets of the Whales,\u201d <em>National Geographic <\/em>features the work of marine biologists who have studied whales over the last few decades.<a href=\"#_edn5\" name=\"_ednref5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[v]<\/a> They have learned that different groups of whales have their own dialects and diets and that they share their songs with each other across oceans. In short, whales may have developed <em>culture <\/em>\u2013 once thought to be unique to humans.\u00a0 Talk with your adult and youth learners about how we might better understand ourselves and other species God has made by \u201cstanding-under\u201d and learning from them through education and science.<\/li>\n<li>On Blessing Animals Sunday, start a project called \u201cOur Fellow Worshipers in God\u2019s Creation\u201d to photo-document the creatures that live around the church. Create posters to display in the church and a page on the church\u2019s website that features members\u2019 photos and list the common name as well as scientific name of the animals as well as interesting facts about them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4><em>* EcoPreacher 1-2-3 is a Creation-centered preaching resource for busy pastors.
