She gave consent to the good God and the good God made all well. Like any courageous human, Mary was not \u201cfearless,\u201d but she chose, did her duty, persisted toward holiness.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, in a crooked world, her straight was remarkable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">She was unknown to the Emperor, though his actions would shape her journey. She ended up frightening the King and so had to go into exile. If she was to become the Mother of God, she had to defy every contemporary political calculation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>She said, \u201cLet it be done. . . \u201c and every sentient being in this cosmos would see Bethlehem as central to reality<\/strong>. Mary, mother of God, would become Queen, awful and terrible to the unrighteous. She was in love with God and that love was requited.<\/p>\n<p>There were zealots in the neighborhood, people who would not compromise with the tyrants, but she could not join their doomed cause. They associated the kingdom with a political order and her Son, her Divine Son, would build a kingdom not of this world. He was building an Empire of souls, eternal, safe for all time by her intercession.<\/p>\n<p>There were Sadducees in Jerusalem. They had made their peace with Herod and Rome. They had the world, pleasures for their flesh, and the approval of devils. There were treats they could distribute. Mary would have none of it. She knew the Temple and\u00a0<em>became<\/em> the Temple for God in the flesh. She wanted God: truth, goodness, beauty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>She spoke<\/strong> and the polis changed, politics changed forever. The humble, the lowly, the oppressed gained a voice from the one human God chose to be His mother when the God-man came.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span class=\"text Luke-1-46\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>And Mary<sup class=\"footnote\" style=\"font-size: 0.625em; line-height: normal; position: relative; vertical-align: text-top; top: auto; display: inline;\" data-fn=\"#fen-NRSV-24932f\" data-link='[&lt;a href=\"#fen-NRSV-24932f\" title=\"See footnote f\"&gt;f&lt;\/a&gt;]'>[<a title=\"See footnote f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+1&amp;version=NRSV#fen-NRSV-24932f\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">f<\/a>]<\/sup> said,<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"poetry\">\n<p class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"text Luke-1-46\">\u201cMy soul magnifies the Lord,<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span id=\"en-NRSV-24933\" class=\"text Luke-1-47\"><sup class=\"versenum\">47\u00a0<\/sup><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,<\/span><\/span><br>\n<span id=\"en-NRSV-24934\" class=\"text Luke-1-48\"><sup class=\"versenum\">48\u00a0<\/sup>for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Luke-1-48\">Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;<\/span><\/span><br>\n<span id=\"en-NRSV-24935\" class=\"text Luke-1-49\"><sup class=\"versenum\">49\u00a0<\/sup>for the Mighty One has done great things for me,<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Luke-1-49\">and holy is his name.<\/span><\/span><br>\n<span id=\"en-NRSV-24936\" class=\"text Luke-1-50\"><sup class=\"versenum\">50\u00a0<\/sup>His mercy is for those who fear him<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Luke-1-50\">from generation to generation.<\/span><\/span><br>\n<span id=\"en-NRSV-24937\" class=\"text Luke-1-51\"><sup class=\"versenum\">51\u00a0<\/sup>He has shown strength with his arm;<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Luke-1-51\">he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.<\/span><\/span><br>\n<span id=\"en-NRSV-24938\" class=\"text Luke-1-52\"><sup class=\"versenum\">52\u00a0<\/sup>He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Luke-1-52\">and lifted up the lowly;<\/span><\/span><br>\n<span id=\"en-NRSV-24939\" class=\"text Luke-1-53\"><sup class=\"versenum\">53\u00a0<\/sup>he has filled the hungry with good things,<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Luke-1-53\">and sent the rich away empty.<\/span><\/span><br>\n<span id=\"en-NRSV-24940\" class=\"text Luke-1-54\"><sup class=\"versenum\">54\u00a0<\/sup>He has helped his servant Israel,<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Luke-1-54\">in remembrance of his mercy,<\/span><\/span><br>\n<span id=\"en-NRSV-24941\" class=\"text Luke-1-55\"><sup class=\"versenum\">55\u00a0<\/sup>according to the promise he made to our ancestors,<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Luke-1-55\">to Abraham and to his descendants forever.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Mary said so many things, but she at least said this: the poor, the rich, the Romans would be made throne-less, cast down, and sent away hungry. This would be true if they persisted in demanding money, power, and treats despite injustice.<\/p>\n<p>No Christian can deny this central song of Christmas, but perhaps the gilding and the glorious musical settings have obscured the message.
